I understand where you're coming from, as well as most of us searching for our ancestors. I am glad that when I'm researching my ancestors I looked at different spellings of the surnames as I have found quite a number of ancestors and that is what we are told to do in our research, as Census takers sometimes didn't know how to spell the surname correctly and wrote down how he or she thought it was spelled. Sometimes even the individual didn't know the correct spelling thats the reason we have different spellings of our surnames. My maiden name was spelled without an ending e and sometimes other relatives spelled it with the e at the end. Hi, I recently posted about my Clarkes I think it was just a week ago and received no responses. I have checked mine thoroughly and they were definitely CLARKE with the e. I have been doing genealogy research for many years and I have checked deeds, marriages, tombstones, interment cards, censuses, court records, seen actual signatures, etc. Since I posted about my EDWIN HARVEY CLARKE 1810-1865 and his wife, ESTHER HUGHES CUNLIFFE 1819-1900, who lived in Chesterfield County, Va., mostly in in the city of Manchester, just last week and you did not respond I assume you are not related. And unless you are the list administrator I don't think it ias up to you to tell me how to post. All I was doing was responding to the posting by Jimmy who mentioned my name. I was not posting my family, which as I say I had done just last week. I run 4 mailing lists myself and I know how to post. Thank you. Beth' Please give us more info on your Clarke line,i.e., where in Va. dates, names. My line is also from Va.originally.Don't ever limit your search to Clarke with the "E".That was a mistake that I made many years ago only to find out that 2out of 3 brothers dropped their "E". ----- Original Message ----- From: "Beth Bond" <suntanr2@att.net> To: <CLARKE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 19, 2001 11:30 AM Subject: Re: [CLARKE] My Clark Line > Hi Jimmy, > I wasn't sure if you meant me. Hi Jimmy, I wasn't sure if you meant me. Perhaps Sandy? As you included her posting in this one. I do not have any Clark line by blood, some later by marriage from Georgia. Hi Beth. Did any of your Clark ancestors live in Mississippi or East Texas (Sabine Co.) My gggrandfather was William F. Clark. He was born in Edgefield District, SC, between 1788-90 (records differ). I have not been able to prove he ever lived in Georgia, but family oral history says my Clarks lived in Georgia before moving to Mississippi. His tombstone in Sabine Co (Clark-Dickey cemetery) says he was a private in the MS militia in the War of 1812. In about 1821 he moved to Sabine Co, TX when Mexico was winning its independence from Spain and settled on a Spanish land grant. I have a book that lists several hundred of his descendants. Some people who have done research on my Clark line think we are descended from, or related to, General Elijah Clark of South Carolina and Georgia. Elijah had a son named John who became Governor of Georgia. In the early 1800s John sent his son to Mississippi to scout for land to settle on. He traveled through MS, which then was Indian country, with a pass signed by the Governor of Georgia. I think my Clarks must be related to the family of John and Elijah, because they follow the same pattern of movement until we landed in East Texas. Does any of this match your records? Thanks. This is probably a long shot , but --- I noticed in your posting a connection between a WRIGHT and CLARK line. Do you know of a Kenion (Kenon, Kinon or Kenyon) WRIGHT? He was administrator of the estate when my gggGrandfather's died intestate in 1827. My ggg Grandfather was John CLARK b. 1768 and he had lived in the Carolinas before we find him in Burke Co. GA in 1802. He settled his family in Laurens Co. GA in about 1810. Kenion WRIGHT died in 1857. We have a letter that says "old Mr. Kinon Wright is ded he went into Edgefield District South Carolina and died therin on the second of September" I keep wondering why he was made Administrator and hoping if I can find the answer it may lead me to the parents of my ggg Grandfather. Seeking a William, Bill or Owen Clarke from IL and then Iowa. He was the father or uncle of a baby boy Clarke born 1 Jan 1867 or 1864 probably in Iowa. The child was adopted by the Joseph Young family near Waterloo Iowa. Any information greatly appreciated and would share that which I have. I am a descendant of William Henry Harrison Clark and John Oscar Clark. John Oscar Clark was my grandfather. John was married several times and he had 2 daughters, Lillian Clark who married Zack White and Pearl Crigger. I don't recall Pearl's husbands name, but I am guessing Will. Pearl Crigger lived in Missouri and Lillian lived in Apache, Oklahoma. They were my Dad's half sisters. My maiden name was Virginia Clark and my parents were Miles & Ruth Clark. I have a sister named Phyllis. We lived in Hutchinson and Great Bend, Kansas in our growing up years. I hope someone sees this and can give me some information about Lillian White and Pearl Crigger. Greetings once again! I'm sorry, I forgot to add the following information to my post. Thomas CLARK/E b. 2/23/1782 Grafton, MA d. 5/2/1844 married Patty WILLARD April 27, 1804 Grafton, MA. One known child, Joseph CLARK/E b. March 16, 1819. **He married Olive T BLACKMAN on 10/19/1837. They had one known daughter Sarah A. CLARK b. December 30, 1837 in Grafton, MA. She married Andrew Jackson BRYANT on August 15, 1856** Does anyone know Olive T. BLACKMAN is? I can't find anything for her at all. Any help straightening out this line is very much appreciated. Thank you, Lisa
Greetings All! I'm looking for help with the following marriage; Thomas CLARK/E b. 2/23/1782 Grafton, MA d. 5/2/1844 married Patty WILLARD April 27, 1804 Grafton, MA. One known child, Joseph CLARK/E b. March 16, 1819. The main problem I'm having is there is no Patty WILLARD listed in the 'Vital Records of Grafton, MA to the year 1849'. I found the rest of her supposed family listed there but not her. Patty WILLARD is b. 1769, I think she's a little young for Thomas CLARK/E and I may have a missing generation. Another researcher thought that Patty WILLARD married a man with the last name of WOOD. I'm also wondering if Thomas CLARK/E is related to Martha CLARKE who married Joseph WILLARD (he would be Patty's grandfather) July 5, 1715 Framingham, MA. She was b. 1694 Framingham, MA d. 6/3/1794 Grafton, MA. She is d/o Issac CLARK/E and Sarah STOWE. Are these CLARK/E and/or WILLARD lines familiar to anyone? Thanks in advance for any assistance! Lisa
I am hoping there is someone on our list that does research into death records at Prince George's County, Maryland and if so could they help me. My birth father drowned in the Potomac River sometime about nine months before I was born and I cannot locate a record here in Virginia. I have been told he drowned off the cost of Alexandria, Virginia and that would be in Maryland waters. I do not know his first name only that my birth mother listed her name as Ruth Mansfield Clark in birth records of the Alexandria, Virginia Hospital. Since I was born January 27, 1933, his death took place sometime during the nine months prior. I know this is a lot to ask, but I am at my wits end. I have been looking for the last seven years and anything I find out about Ruth leads to dead ends. She had eight other children and with the depression could not keep me. I was not legally adopted so there are no records to try to force open and any one who is still living in the family that I was raised with no nothing, except to confirm her name and that she came and went back to Hoadly, Virginia. I can go to the County Court houses to look for records in Fredericksburg, Manassas, Stafford and Spotsylvania, VA and would be glad to do research in return for help. I just wish I had more information. about him. Thank you for your time. Shirley SReilly934@aol.com
