Any information on Clarke or Danks would be nice. Grandfather was a lamp lighter in London. I presume an unusal job? Living Clarke's seem to be in the Bournemouth Area. Others in the Greater London area, Possibly Southwark, Lewisham, Lee. Thank you for taking the time to read this Stephen

Just didn't want someone to be being mislead in their search plugging in an e for an and coming up empty. <lol> Good luck with your search. Wish I could help. Don't know if my CLARK/CLARKE's made into 96th District or not. They were in Edgecombe Co., NC in 1688 with my Jean ? and Robert CLARKE whose daughter, Hannah CLARKE, married Jacob UNDERWOOD so that phases out the CLARKE name in my descent in my maternal lineage. In my paternal lineage, my 3rd great grandmother, Elizabeth PIERCE, was born in 1790 in the 96th District, SC, I believe. Still trying to confirm her parents without much luck either. And she, too, was in Mississippi around before or about 1827 in Jasper County with her husband, William MYRICK. They were in Georgia and Alabama in between those times. I think the connections of 96th District and Mississippi are the "bogging down" places for many of us. Bellinda
I have finally posted my Clarke Info on a Family Treemaker site. the URL is : http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/n/e/w/Jane-M-Newcomb/index.html
Jimmy: I do not know who Steve's parents or grandparents are, I was given his name by a Martha Clark from Mississippi. She said that he descended from William. Did not really learn that much from my reunion except that my great uncle James Edward Clark (Jimmy) confirmed my memory about my grandfather, James Anderson Clark, saying that we were kin to the William Clark, Jr. that signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. He did not remember what the kinship was but thought that both Williams were cousins. Martha's husband is kin to a Wilson Lucius Clark who was from Edgefield Dist. of SC, he was born November 2, 1794 and she thinks that maybe our William and he were brothers but like us has not been able to find any information to prove this. This Wilson married a Lavinia Garlington in Amite County, Mississippi, another clue to kinship as some Garlingtons show up in Sabine County and marry into the Clark family there. She also told me that one of Wilsons descendents thought that Wilson's mother was a Paschal before she married Wilson's father, thus another clue as Elijah Clark, a son of William, named one of his sons Paschal. Just a few more areas in which to work. Larry BTW: What book did you borrow? >>> jclark0525@hotmail.com 06/22/01 02:21PM >>> Hi Larry. Charles Sothoron Clark b. abt 1742 and Leonard Clark b. abt 1749,, both of St. Mary's Co., Md. who both appear in Wake and Granville co., NC records, didn't have a brother Benjamin but did have an uncle who might have migrated to the area abt.. the same time. The uncle Benjamin, was born abt. 1721, so this Benjamin probably isn't the Benjamin Clark of Granville Co and Wake Co., NC who was the father of Alexander. Clark. I am sure they are connected, possibly a son? The other Benjamin Clark of Haywood Co., NC and from "Danville, Va" on is probably also connected but how I don't know. We talk about naming patterns, well this Benjamin had a son by the name of Alfred I Clark. My ancestor, Leonard Clark, a son of the Leonard Clark listed above also named a son, Alfred Clark. This name was passed down into the following generation in my family as was the name Alfred in the Benjamin Clark of Haywood Co., NC line. Your thoughts? Help? I am trying to find the parents of Susannah CLARK. She is mentioned as a granddaughter in Richard FOSTER's 26 Nov 1794 will, which was proved 24 Feb 1795 in Surry County. She is a minor and her guardianship is given to another grandchild, John H. FOSTER, the son of Ransom FOSTER and Elizabeth COMAN. A James CLARK witnessed the will but I don't know if he is the father of Susannah. I also do not have the name of Richard FOSTER's daughter who apparently had died before the 1794 will was written. I have seen a deed which listed a James CLARK and wife, Caty, but haven't found any marriage information so don't know if this would be a FOSTER or not. Does anyone have any information on this family? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Nancy
The 1778 document quoted in the message appears to indicate the Revolutionary War. The best source to date is a book entitled The Chitester/Chidester Families. It is in the main genealogical library of The LDS in Salt Lake City. You can research this in any LDS family history center. I can not recall the surname of the author. His first name was Elmer and his wife's name was Thelma. Thelma was the Chidester descendant. The info on my line is insufficient. Since you are researching the CLark line...I presume...what are your Clark origins? Hello List! Thank you in advance for any possible help or even the slightest clue. My CLARK/E family has been my biggest brick wall for years. Here is what I think I know: My gg grandmother Ruth Ann Clark/e (who m. Fenton B. HALL) is supposedly a great granddaughter of Sir William Clarke, who resigned from the British Navy to cast his lot with the American Colonies in the Revolutionary War, and received honorable mention at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Ruth Ann CLARK's mother was Amelia Monroe HOOPER, daughter of Matthew Brooks HOOPER, Sr. and Elizabeth Adams WORD (Jr.). Amelia Monroe HOOPER married John CLARK/E in about 1812 in either Pendleton Distric, SC or Franklin Co, GA (Franklin Co, GA once encompassed what are now Anderson, Pickens, and Oconee Counties in SC). Amelia and John CLARK/E had three daughters [if there were other children, I don't have their names]: Elizabeth W. (W. for WORD, I believe), b. Jul 7, 1813 Ruth Ann, b. 9-30-1814, GA (place according to 1850 census) Harriett Perry, b. Sep. 19, 1818 Ruth Ann CLARK/E m. Fenton B. HALL Nov. 23, 1830 either in SC or GA. They lived in Anderson Co, SC until 1848 when they moved to Tishomingo Co, MS. Her mother, Amelia (Hooper) CLARK remarried in 1826 to James Dickinson WORD, Sr., so I'm assuming that John CLARK/E had died before that (although other explanations are possible). The HALL family lived in Halifax Co, VA before moving to SC in about 1785. There were CLARK/Es in Halifax Co, VA who may connect but if so, I haven't yet found the connection. I am looking for the parents of John CLARK/E. John's father would have been a son of Sir William CLARKE, if the information above proves out. If John CLARK/E was about the same age as his wife, he would have been born ca. 1796 but my feeling is that he may have been older than she. If anyone has seen any bit of info that might help with this puzzle, I would be so grateful to see it. Thanks in advance for your help! Becky Smith
Hi, Okay, this may be a "Duh!!!" question, but, was this for the Revolution or the War of 1812? Bev "C. Sandy, There might be a connection, but your John NGF Clark isn't my John Freeman Clark. My ggf married Sarah Watson around 1855, and she was probably his second wife. They moved to Northwest Florida by 1860, and he died there in 1889. It seems very likely that two John Clarks - sharing the middle name of Freeman and born around the same time in Georgia - are related somehow. Mine was a minister of some kind - possibly Congregational. If you have any clues, I'd love to share them. Gayle
