Trish, The name Baylis Clark sets off some alarms for me. I have a John Baylis Clarke who was born in 1791 in SC. He married Jennie Sammons probably from Greenville or Anderson Dist. SC by 1820 and was living in Anderson Dist. SC by 1833. He had two children Elizabeth Clarke and John B. Clarke, Jr. John was a cabinet maker by trade and was on the Anderson Town Council for a while. His son and son-in law Jesse R. Smith were a merchant tailors in Anderson, SC. His wife Jennie died fairly young, and in the 1850 census a Jane Clarke, born c1775 in NC, was living with him. She could have been a sister, mother, or stepmother. This Jane Clarke is the only clue that I have to John Baylis Clarke's ancestry. The two Johns couldn't have been brothers but maybe related in some other way. Trying to find a Richard Clark and his wife Christina, reported to have lived in Jacksonville, State is not confirmed. They would have had a daughter about 1896, Mary Clark.
