    1. [CLARKE] Clarks, NC, SC & GA, 1768 on
    2. I thank the person who woke me up. I have been on this list a long time and have not posted recently. Maybe if we post these southern Clark(e) families it will help. My CLARK line were supposed to come from VA, through the Carolinas and finally settled in GA. One family story is that they were cattle herders along the NC/SC border in the late 1700s. The first thing we know for sure was that my ggg Grandfather John Clark was in Burke Co. GA in 1805 when he qualified for the GA land lottery. We feel sure his brother Eli and probably a brother Henry were with him there. John married Amelia (Emelia) Sikes (Sykes) probably in Burke Co. Let me add they had sisters named Hester and Mary. We have these lines on down pretty well documented. The exception to that is Mary. John settled in Laurens County GA. His brother Eli settled in Thomas/Colquitt area. John's sister Hester m. Thomas Lindsey and they were among the first settlers of Montgomery Co. There is a Henry Clark in the Montgomery/Laurens Co area that we feel sure was a sibling. Here are the children for John. I have details if you think you might connect. 1 John Clark b. 9/28/1768 according to family Bible d. 3/20/1827 + Amelia Sikes b. 7/25/1785 2 Nancy b.10/20/1803 never married 2 Calphrey b. 10/4/1806 +Cynthia Burch 2 John Gias Nicholas Freeman b. 3/25/1809 + Elizabeth McClendon 2 Mary b. 7/6/1811 +Samuel Miller 2 Amarintha b. 2/1/1814 +Willian Clark 2 Matthew b. 4/7/1816 + Elizabeth Burch + Ursula A. S. Hudson Weaver 2 Elizabeth b. 4/25/1818 + John Jacob Asker Gay 2 Harlow b. 6/15/1820 + Rachel Gillis 2 Amelia b. 8/15/1822 2 George Flournoy b. 10/2/1824 + Harriett Lindsey + Cynthia Willis 2 Francis Marion b. 12/6/1825 + Eleanor Ingram Would appreciate input and will share info. 3. I am posting from memory because I am at work, but will post more when I get home. I have a copy of land grants for George Clark in Georgetown District SC dated 1789. Two for 100 acres. He stayed there until he died in 1840. He was married to Sarah? who died in 1844 Marion Co. Their son Kenion (my ancestor) was administrator of both probate records. George and Sarah had George Jr. who moved to Covington Co. AL by 1840 as per George Sr's probate record. They also had Burgess, Kenion, Sarah, Delilah, a daughter who had predeceased them that had been married and had children with John Kennedy/Cannady. Kenion was married to Martha J. ? (we think Johnson) and had several kids. Kenion died in 1849 of typhoid per Marlboro mortality census for 1850. In 1850, there was an Alexander Clark age 18 in the house with Martha. He disappeared and I havent figured out the relationship. George Jr. had alot of kids but I will have to pull my notes to post them. Anything else? 1. Re: [CLARKE] Wrong lsit
    2. Larry Crocker
    3. Trish: My ggg grandfather was William Clark from the 96 district (Edgefield) South Carolina thru Alabama and Amite County Mississippi to Sabine District of Texas in about 1821. He married Elizabeth Isaacks in Amite County, Mississippi on 16 March 1812 and they had 13 children together. Elizabeth's parents, Elijah Isaacks and Hester Donaho also moved to Texas about the same time as William and Elizabeth, settling in Bevil's Settlement. Elizabeth died in 1836 during or close to the time of the Runnaway Scrape. Research in the Texas State Archives has turned up a letter written by her son, James, to General M.B. Lamar dated 23 July1836 whereby he emplores the General to get word to his father that Elizabeth had died. Family lore has always said that Elizabeth died during the Runaway Scrape and was burried somewhere between Hemphill and the Sabine River while fleeing the Mexican Army. The discovery of the letter casts a shadow of doubt on this but does not disprove it. After Elizabeth died, William married Mahala Graham on 21 December 1836 and they had 6 children and I descend from their son Andrew. We do not know anything about William's parents or siblings but possible kinfolk are: Both William Clark, Jr's of early Sabine County, Texas. My great grandfather, James Anderson Clark always told the family that we were kin to William Clark, Jr. who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. You can read about these Clark's in the Texas Handbook on Line. Other possible connections are to John C. Clark who was born in South Carolina about 1798 and came to Texas about 1822. He settled in Wharton County, Texas and you can read more about him in the Texas Handbook on Line. Another possible connection is to Edward Clark, former Governor of Texas who was the son of Elijah Clark, Jr. brother to John Clark, Governor of Georgia from 1819 to 1823. Another possible connection is to Wilson Clark of Amite County, Mississippi whom we think may have been William's brother. His heirs have never been able to prove up his parents or siblings either. There must be someone out there working on the Clark lines from North Carolina, South Carolina or Georgia. I would love to hear from them. 1. [CLARKE] NC to SC to TN Clarks
    2. Sue Howard
    3. Okay, here's my line, working backwards: My grandmother was Louisa Frances (Fanny) Clark born in the 1860's in Neshoba County, Mississippi. She married my grandfather, John R. Johnson, born in 1859 in Neshoba Co., MS My great grandfather was Ebenezer Samuel Clark, born in 1835 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. He married Elizabeth Camilla Winfield. My great, great grandfather was John Clark, born in 1790 in York Co., SC, married an Elizabeth McKee, born 1798 in SC. My 3rd great grandfather was James Clark, possibly born in 1764 in York Co., SC, married Mary Cowan, born 1768 . My 4th great grandfather was Joseph Clark, born before 1750 - I would say probably in the Anson/Mecklenburg, NC area, married a Margaret (possible last name - Faver). We know he bought and sold land quite a bit in York Co., SC. Now, you say, well you know a lot more about your Clarks than I do - well - I would like to know MORE about them all, plus I would like to meet some new cousins if there are any out there, researching. Will exchange information. Sue Howard SueHoward@prodigy.net
