This family later moved to Tennessee where my 2nd great grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Clark was born abt 1820 in Tennessee and later they moved to Alabama. Could this be a connection to your family? I have not been able to find out anything about Owen or his father. What I can find is a census record of a child named Alexander with Owen's exact birthday on it. The father and mother are listed as Alexander and Elizabeth (Pauley). I haven't been able to confirm that this is our Owen but I strongly suspect that it is. Especially now that you have called him Owen Alexander. We have carried the name Allen through our family and assumed it came from Owen A. it turns out that it came from the McClure side rather than the Clark side. Later we heard that the initial "A" in Owen's name was for Alec. I started to suspect that perhaps it was Alex and short for Alexander. I think our Owen was called Alexander on the early census records. Please contact me. > Do you live in West Virginia perhaps? If so I could come down and visit. 3. Linda, my Clarks are from the Olney, Richland Co. Il. area. I have traced them from my grand mother Blanche Jenner Bailey from Olney, IL. through the Clarks to the Johnsons. I have Susan Johnson daughter of Moses Johnson marrying John Clark. I will be away for about a week. Please let me know if we are related if so I would love to have a copy of your letter. I have documented all my people except for Susan Johnson and John Clark. I do have a copy of a will by Moses Johnson giving John Clark $1.00. Enclosing the following: Susan Johnson B. abt. 1788 married John Clark in 1810 John Clark and Susan had the following children: Anna, Miriam, Francis, Susan (B.1818 in IL., John Jr., Francis Clark B. 1817 married Nancy Rawlings had the following children: Robert, Susan B. 1840 IL, John Isaiah Lacy, Rachel, James Raleigh Robert Clark B. 1838 to Amanda Janes Shores had the following child: Nancy Caroline B. 1862 (she was my grandmothers mother) Nancy Caroline Clark B. 1862 IL married James Madison Jenner in 1880 My grandmother Blanche Mae Jenner was my grandmother and married John Henry Bailey. She is whom I have documented to Moses Johnson, father of Susan Johnson to qualify for the Daughter of the American Revolution. I can not find documents proving that Susan is the daughter of Moses Johnson or married to John Clark. I have a will that states Moses left $1 to John Clark. 3. I have a Catheren (sic) Cordelia (Kate) Clark who married Henry Clay Stephenson b. abt 1845 of Franklin County, Georgia. I have no other information on her as to her parents or siblings. I see that you don't have a b. date for your Catherine either, but the time frame is possible. She could have been born after Destimony. I don't know where, but I feel certain I've come across your names before in connection with my Stephenson research. Now, my maiden name was Clarke, so I have both lines; but this would be a maternal line rather than my paternal line. One son may be John M b 1828. Wiley's father may be Thomas Clark, Revolutionary Soldier, who was born in Granville County, NC on July 22, 1761. Thomas moved to Franklin County in the 1820s. 3. This was great, Thanks so much for sharing!! Thanks again, Janice Atoy Curren ----- Original Message ----- From: Marianne Cook Sent: Friday, August 03, 2001 10:28 PM To: CLARKE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [CLARKE] The Grandfather I got the following from a friend, and thought I should share it with you: "Guess How Old This Grandfather Is One evening a grandson was talking to his grandfather about current events. He asked what he thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general. The granddad replied, "Well, let me think a minute ... I was born before television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, contact lenses, Frisbees and the pill. There was no radar, credit cards, laser beams or ball-point pens. Man had not invented pantyhose, air conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers, well the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and man hadn't yet walked on the moon. Your grandmother and I got married first -- and then lived together. Every family had a father and a mother, and every boy over 14 had a rifle that his dad taught him how to use and respect. And they went hunting and fishin together. Until I was 25, I called every man older than I, 'Sir' -- and after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, 'Sir.' Sundays were set aside for going to church as a family, helping those in need, and visiting with family or neighbors. We were before gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy. Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense. We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions. Serving your country was a privilege; living here was a bigger privilege. We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent. Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins. Draft dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the evening breeze started. Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends -- not purchasing condominiums. We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing ear rings. We listened to the Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios. And I don't ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey. If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan' on it, it was junk. The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam. Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of. We had 5 & 10-cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents. Ice cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel. And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards. You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600, but who could afford one? Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon. In my day, 'grass' was mowed, 'coke' was a cold drink, 'pot' was something your mother cooked in, and 'rock music' was your grandmother's lullaby. 'Aids' were helpers in the Principal's office, 'chip' meant a piece of wood, 'hardware' was found in a hardware store, and 'software' wasn't even a word. And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation gap ... and I am only 58 years old." 1. Re: [CLARKE] John B. Clarke b-1791 SC
    2. I have a Baylis Clark b. Jan 1847, NC m. Harriet E. b. NC. I have John Wesley Clark b. ca 1805 in N C listed as the father and Elizabeth Harkins as the mother. According to the information I have siblings were: Moses Clark b. SC., James Riley Clark b. ca 1828, Sarah Ann Clark b. May 3, 1831 in NC, Mahulda Rachel Clark (my line) b Dec 3, 1831 NC, William Clark b. ca 1835, Thomas W. Clark b. June 19, 1837 b. SC., Mary Clark b. ca 1841, Martha Clark b ca 1842, Elvira Clark ca 1850 Greenville, Co., SC. Don't know if this helps but just thought I would send it along to you. There may be errors. I have never "proven" this information. I thought that it was interesting that the siblings were born in both NC and SC. I am looking for the parents/siblings of John Welsey Clark and his wife Elizabeth Harkins. If you have anything on them I would greatly appreciate that information. Patricia Hyatt Henson

    1. [CLARKE] John C. Clark and Susan Jane Ewing, VA-GA
    2. emilyjkardos
    3. If any of you have any information concerning the following two people, please contact me at ejkardos@myexcel.com. I keep posting this hoping for a reply since I have hit a brick wall where these two are concerned. My Greatgrandfather was John C. Clark, born in Virginia and lived near Natural Bridge and Lexington, Virginia. He married Susan Jane Ewing and they moved to North Georgia before 1870 (they were on the 1870 census for Lumpkin County, Georgia). He and Susan died within ten days of each other of a fever of some kind in 1885. Some of their children were: Anna Eliza (my grandmother) Charles Edward (died at sea as a child) John Calhoun, Jr. Elizabeth George Rogers William Edward Charles Christopher Benjamin I believe John Calhoun's father was William Clark, ;but which William? Because of their children's names, I wonder if there is a connection to the William Clark who explored the west. Help, please, and thanks. Emily
