Sarah Clark, wife of Thomas Clark Sr., was the daughter of James & Elizabeth Clark of Orange County, NC. The names of all the children and grandchildren of James & Elizabeth Clark of Orange County <below> are proven by the following Bedford County, Tennessee, deed. Dear Cousins: I posted an e-mail earlier today that seems to have been lost in cyberspace. Please forgive me if this turns out to be a duplicate. I have reasons to believe, because of certain Randolph Co, NC, deeds and the Will of Thomas Clark (s/o Samuel Clark of Guilford/Randolph Co, NC) that my Samuel Clark Sr. may have been the son of Thomas Clark. According to the Will of Thomas Sr., he had two sons, Samuel & Thomas. 150 acres were granted to Samuel and remaining property was to be divided among the 4 daughters of Thomas (Sr.)--Catherine, Hannah, Jane & Sarah. So far, all family trees containing the children of Thomas that I have found on Rootsweb show no issue for Thomas Jr. or Samuel. Additionally, I am told that Thomas Sr.'s father Samuel Clark had seven sons & perhaps one daughter. Please note that the following is is what I believe to be proven. There is conflicting information that states the wife of the elder Samuel Clark was Elizabeth Bennett. This has been soundly disproven. Likewise, the wife of Thomas Clark has only recently come to light in a deed that was found in Bedford county, TN: 1 Samuel CLARK d: 06 Sep 1783 in Asheboro, Randolph Co, NC ....... 2 Thomas CLARK b: Abt. 1743 York Co, PA d: 11 Dec 1787 in Randolph Co, NC ........... +Sarah CLARK d: Bef. 20 Sep 1808 in Randolph Co, NC ....... 2 Edward CLARK b: Abt. 1745 York Co, PA ....... 2 Samuel E. There were a number of Clarks who married Quakers, resulting in the Quaker spouse marrying out of unity. Related families were THORNBOROUGH/THORNBERRY, BRATTON/BRATTAIN, DOUGAN. Also possibly connected were the BELL, VICKERY & WALL families. There is a Samuel Clark b. 1769 who is buried in Randolph County, NC. In order to prove or disprove that my Samuel Clark b. ca. 1770 was the son of Thomas Clark and Sarah Clark, I must prove or disprove the identity of this 2nd Samuel Clark buried in Randolph County. Any and all information that may aid in this endeavor would be very much appreciated. My Samuel Clark Sr. arrived in Wayne County, Kentucky, about 1807, along with the brothers Francis and William BELL of Randolph County, NC. As for the remaining children of Samuel Clark, Joseph is said to have died in Randolph County. Edward migrated to Tennessee. He MAY have died in Georgia--I have not seen any documentation to that effect. William migrated to Indiana. Anyone interesting in taking a look at my Samuel Clark Sr. of Wayne County, KY, may find him on my My WorldConnect database, The Clarks of Otter Creek and Related Families, at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=gmcflc&I11.x=42&I11.y=6 I would very much like to hear from anyone working these family lines. While looking for something else I found an address for Anna L. Thornburgh, the married name of Anna Losie Clarke born 1875. Her Father Andrew Losee Clarke b-August 14,1847 in Wanatora, Wis. died Oct. 17, 1876 in Scotland Co., MO and buried in Clark City Cemetery near Kahoka, MO, when she was only 1 or 2 years old so perhaps her mother remarried and Anna Losie may have used the new husband's name?? I don't know the name or if in fact her Mother remarried. Her mother's maiden name was Anna Marie Pope born in Clark City, Mo. married November 25, 1873.The address I found in her Uncle (My Grandfather)William Irving Gilhousen's belongings was: Cousin Losie Thornburgh, 524 East Charles, Lakeland, Florida. I then found in the Florida Death Index: Anna L. Thornburgh Volume:2557 Certificate: 10301 Place: Polk - Race W - Gender: F - Death Date: Feb.1964. If anyone knows anything more please respond. I would be extremely grateful. Leah Fernald lfernald @aol.com
I have reason to believe, because of certain Randolph Co, NC, deeds and the Will of Thomas Clark (s/o Samuel Clark of Guilford/Randolph Co, NC) that my Samuel Clark was the son of this Thomas Clark. According to the Will of Thomas Sr., he had one other son, Thomas. 150 acres were granted to Samuel and remaining property to be divided among the 4 daughters of Thomas (Sr.)--Catherine, Hannah, Jane & Sarah. So far, all family trees containing the children Thomas that I have found on Rootsweb show no issue for Thomas Jr. or Samuel. There is a Samuel Clark b. 1769 buried in Randolph County, NC. I need help to establish who he was in such a way as either to prove or definitively to disprove that he was Samuel Clark who was the son of Thomas Clark, Sr. I am told that Thomas Sr.'s father Samuel Clark had seven sons & maybe one daughter. The following information is not necessarily proven: Thomas CLARK b: ABT 1743 in York Co, PA m. Sarah Clark (marriage proved by deed) Edward CLARK b: ABT 1745 in York Co, PA (named in Thomas' will) Samuel E. CLARK b: OCT 1748 in Randolph Co, NC m. Rachel Brattain/Bratton (marriage proven) George CLARK b: 22 JUN 1749 in York Co, PA William CLARK b: 1753 in York Co, PA m. Eleanor Dougan (marriage proven) Joseph CLARK, Captain b: ABT 1756 m. Nancy Merrill John CLARK, Captain b: 7 JUN 1759 in Randolph Co, NC m. Mary Spencer Daughter CLARK b: ABT 1761 The Clarks appear to have intermarried with THORNBOROUGH/THORNBERRY (& variations), BRATTON/BRATTAIN and DOUGAN families, and may also be connected with BELL, VICKERY and WALL families in Randolph Co, NC. It appears they moved westward into Tennessee and northward to Indiana. My Samuel Clark Sr. b. ca. 1770 may be found in Wayne County, KY after 1807. The patriarchal Samuel Clark was a devout Presbyterian, however his son William became a Quaker after the Revolutionary War. There are indications this family had Quaker intermarriages where the Quaker spouse married out of unity. Anyone interested in seeing the descendants of my Samuel Clark, Sr. may find them on my WorldConnect database "The Clarks of Otter Creek and Related Families" at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=gmcflc&I11.x=42&I11.y=6 I would very much like to hear from anyone working these family lines. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mBJ.2ACEB/1256 Message Board Post: I am looking for the ancestors of Mary M. Clark,Sarah F. Clark, and Benjamin Clark of Dinwiddie County, Virginia. Mary was born around 1826 and married John Jones Alston of Chatham County, North Carolina, in 1846. Mary was my GG Grandmother, and I am interested in learning her parents' names. Her mother was Jane Bushfield Clark, but I am not sure whether or not Bushfield was her maiden name or just her middle name. Father may have been Thomas E. Clark or William Clark, Jr. The mother died in 1840 or 1841 but father was still alive in summer 1840. Mary's sister, Sarah(b. 1823) married George W. Butts abt. 1848. Their daughter, Clara Wilkins Butts was born in 1857 and married Thomas Eppes Fenner in 1882. Their daughter was named Clara Louise Fenner. I believe the Butts family lived in Prince George County, Virginia. I have no information on Benjamin except that he was living as of 1840 and apparently was younger than Sarah. I believe that there were also three other brothers in the Clark family -- J.B. Clark, D.C. Clark, and G. Clark, all of whom may have been physicians. The brothers apparently moved to the Kosse, Texas (Limestone County) area after the end of the War Between the States. Hope someone can help me with more information on any of the above individuals.
For approximately three weeks in May and June John Giacoletti and I made a research trip to Northern Ireland to gather information on some of the Defenders of Derry. I said I would post our findings to the various lists that had been contacted prior to our departure. To view all of our posts please go to the rootsweb.com main page and find the link to "threaded archives" Type in COWAN and search June and July 2002 and you will find some really interesting posts describing our research adventures. If you have any comments or questions please feel free to contact me at [email protected] Prior to the trip I offered four obscure, out-of-print publications that should be included in every Ulster Presbyterian's genealogical library. They all have either expired copyright provisions or, in the case of the Hagy thesis, I have the author's permission to reproduce the document. The publications are: "The Laggan and its Presbyterianism" and "In the Days of the Laggan Presbytery," 1905,1908, by the Rev. Alexander Lecky, B.A. member of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, Belfast 211 pages We met JB Shannon, age 90, who assisted in the 1975 reprint and he said these books are still the BEST source for Ulster Presbyterian research. Books contain lists of former generations of Lagganeers, and their places of abode, which have never before appeared in print. "Fighters of Derry, Their Deeds and Descendants, being a Chronicle of Events in Ireland during the Revolutionary period 1688-1691," by William R. Young, 1932, Eyre and Spottiswoode, London, 350 pages. One of the most difficult sources to locate, in fact almost impossible. Contains biographical sketches (1200+) of the Defenders of Derry "A History of the Siege of Londonderry and Defence of Enniskillen in 1688 and 1689, with Historical Poetry and Biographical Notes," by the Rev. John Graham, M.A. Rector of Magilligan in the Diocese of Derry. Includes the Battles of the Boyne, Athlone, and Aughrim and the siege and capitulation of Limmerick by Lord Macaulay, Toronto, 1869 311 pages. Full of genealogical information about the families who were at Derry. "Castle's Woods: Frontier Virginia Settlement, 1769-1799, a thesis presented to the Faculty of the Department of History, East Tennessee State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts, by James Hagy, 1966, 150 pages. The most popular of the documents offered, this covers the families who settled in Russell county, Virginia when it was considered the frontier. And a new addition: "The Tinkling Spring, Headwater of Freedom" A Study of the Church and Her People, Howard McKnight Wilson, Fisherville, 1954 This book contains more genealogy of the early settlers of Augusta/Rockbridge Counties Virginia than any other. Baptismal records of the Rev. Craig and detailed analysis of many of the early families from the 1740's on. Please contact me privately at [email protected] for details on how to acquire these materials. It is very slow and cumbersome to contact each list individually so in the future I will be putting these and other items I deem valuable on abebooks.com Once again, I will be happy to answer any questions that have to do with the migration of Scots-Irish people from Ulster to Pa, Virginia and Tennessee. But remember, I probably don't know who your mamma is, I had a hard enough time figuring out who mine was. Regards, Robert Cowan 525 Harrogate Rd. Matthews, North Carolina 28105
