    1. [Clarke-Clark] James CLARK, Bricks have come off of "brick wall" .. (MA to AUSTRALIA, 1845)
    2. BBFFRRPP
    3. Hello, Just a few minutes ago some of the bricks have fallen off one of my "brick walls." For 2 years I have been searching for any information at all about a James CLARK to no avail. All I knew is that he probably lived in Little Compton, RI, in the 1820's, and married Mrs. Rhoda (MANCHESTER) LAVARE in Westport, MA, in 1829. They had a daughter born there in 1837. Because of the Internet, I have connected with a "distant cousin" in CT, who is a descendant of Rhoda's first marriage to Epaphroditus LAVARE, and their 3 children. She and I decided to research these families together. I had already found out that the 1850 Census for Westport, MA, showed Mrs. Rhoda CLARK and her daughter, Mary Anna, but it did not show her husband, James CLARK. So, my assumption was that James had died during the 1840's. Another "guess" I made is that, since Rhoda's first husband was a mariner, James might have been also. Just an hour ago, my "distant cousin" went to a web site offering names of crewmen on whaling ships out of New Bedford, MA, and .. Voila' ... there was James CLARK. But, more than that, she found out where he went: James CLARK, Rank: Greenhand, Ship Name: OCEAN Port of Registry: New Bedford, Whaling Ground: INDIAN Departure Date: 12/31/1844, Return Date: 11/7/1848 Remarks: DESERTED AT SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, 9/18/1845 IF we have found the correct James CLARK, it now seems that I might have "very distant cousins" in Australia. We don't know when James was born. His wife, Rhoda, was born in 1800 in Westport, MA. But, we don't know whether she married an older man, or a younger man. If James was born anywhere around 1800, then, when he arrived in Australia, he was in his 40's. 3. Melanie, I have a gggrandfather, Dutchy Clark(e) in my family. He had 2 children Eliza and Bertha. Eliza was born in 1887 and Bertha about 4 years before both in Indianapolis, Marion Co, Indiana. Dutchy is the only name he is known by, and birth records show Dutchy too. He died while living in Marion Co in a swimming accident sometime in the very early 1900's. Does your Alonso have brothers? 3. Hello, While still searching for the family of origin of James CLARK/E who was probably born between 1790 and 1800 (don't know where), I found the Census information on the GenWeb site for Bristol County, MA. Here I found at least a half-dozen and possibly a full-dozen CLARK or CLARKE families living in Bristol County in the 1790 Census. One example is the town of Freetown, MA, where both Theophilus CLARK and Theophilus CLARK, Jr., both lived with their families. Also in that town were Asa CLARK and Richard CLARK and their families. In nearby Somerset, MA, there was a Silas CLARK and his family. Out of curiousity, I looked up Theophilus CLARK at www.familysearch.org and found quite a selection of them. And, during the 1700's, there were men, named Theophilus CLARK, in both eastern MA and eastern CT. In particular, I noted that one family was in Plainfield, Windham County, CT. The DEXTER family I am researching was centered around Killingly/Danielson, in Windham County, CT, between 1790 and 1850. And, I believe a few of the Dexter's married in Plainfield. ..I was wondering if anyone was researching the above CLARK families in Bristol County, MA, in 1790, and knew whether any of them had a son, James CLARK, born between 1790 and 1800. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) P.S. James CLARK was in Little Compton, RI, in the 1820's, but married in 1829 in Westport, MA. James and Rhoda CLARK in Westport, MA, had a daughter, Mary Anna CLARK in 1837. Probably around 1855 to 1865, Mary CLARK married John DEXTER, who was reportedly born in Killingly, CT, in 1833. 1. [Clarke-Clark] George CLARK .. MA to CA .. early 1900's .. (Orange Groves in CA??)
    2. BBFFRRPP
    3. Hello, I was just given some of my mother's handwritten notes from when she started researching her family tree about 30 years ago. In the notes I found a reference to a Mr. George CLARK/E. It seems he was originally? from MA, but moved to CA where he owned "an orange grove." This was probably in the early 1900's. He was probably related to .. William and Mary CLARK/E, who my grandmother thought for a while were her .. birth-parents. We have no idea why she thought this. Both William and George CLARK/E were probably directly related to Mrs. Mary Anna (CLARK/E) DEXTER, who was born in Westport, MA, in 1837. She was the daughter of James CLARK/E of Little Compton, RI, and Westport, MA, during his adult years. I do not know where or when he was born, but suspect the 1790's. All I know about my grandmother's official information was found in her Adoption File which I had opened in Cambridge, MA, a few years ago. She was born in Feb. 1889 in Boston, MA, and was "a foundling." In Mar. 1892, she was adopted by John and Mary (CLARK/E) DEXTER. They were Age 55 at the time, possibly 59 and 55, depending on John Dexter being born in Killingly, CT, in 1833. When she was "a foundling," she was given the name, Daisy WATROUS. So, I don't know why she would have been given that name, if she was born to William and Mary CLARK. If I let my imagination run wild, I could say that John and Mary DEXTER's teen-age daughter (unknown name) got pregnant in 1888, by way of a CLARK relative. Perhaps they married later on ??? I can find out ..no.. information about the married years of John and Mary DEXTER, and, as a result I don't know how many children they had. But, there are hints that they might have had a son who was much older than their daughter. Thank you for your time. I don't know what county or parish in London that would fall under. Would also appreciate guidance as to how I might track down children from the marriage, and any other BDM details. Thanks. 3. Leon is not a family - at least back to my George W. William is common. There are several George W's in the Confederate and Union Armies. Stephen is a more common name and William is common. Maybe George S was a George Stephen. I will have to check out Spotsylvania. Thanks, ************** Leon S Clark ****************************************************************** Searching surnames: Brooks, Chappell, Clark, Fitzpatrick, McDonald, Miller, O'Neil ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, December 22, 2002 6:38 AM Subject: Re: [Clarke-Clark] George W. Clark (1806 NC/VA -1889 MS) | My great grandfather was George William Clark(e) born 15 Sept 1846 in | Spotsylvania County, VA. He was a 16 year old soldier during the Civil War | and never left Spotsylvania County after the War, so he doesn't qualify as | your George, but since the family tends to re-use the same names, he could be | a cousin. Is Leonard a family name in your family? I notice you sign as | Leon. The reason I ask is that George was the son of John Henry Clark(e), | who was son of William S. Clark(e), who was son of Leonard Clark(e) of | Caroline County, Va. There was at least one Leonard who took his name from | this Leonard. There was also a Leonard Clark(e) in Shenandoah County, who | lived at about the same time as the one in Caroline County. He may have | been younger and from the same family, or he may have been from an entirely | different family. | | Deborah |

    3. Found the following in a book called PIONEER TIMES, volume 12, 1988. I don't know these folks, am not related, and have typed everything there is in the book to type about them. Just thought YOU might be interested in the info here, and if it helps even 1 person, it was worth my time and trouble. Joanne Scobee Morgan CRAWFORD COUNTY, MISSOURI NEWSPAPERS The following newspaper clippings were pasted in an old scrap book. The unknown collector had clipped them from an 1891 Crawford County Missouri Newspaper... I don't know the name of it or the dates on some of these. ____LVILLE, MO, Nov 19, 1891 (Probably Steelville) Obituary Miss LOU COWDEN, who died at her sister's, Mrs. M. O. TAYLOR's at Bourbon, on the 9th inst., was the daughter of the REV. J. W. COWDEN, formerly of this county, and at the time of her death, was in the 35th year of her age. She has resided in the city for a number of years and was in the country this fall to try and recuperate her health, which has been very much impaired for some time, when she was attacked with the erysipelas and only lived a few days. Miss Lou became converted to the cause of Christ under her father's preaching when very young and from that time to her death lived a model Christian life. She showed her Christian virtues in all her wilks in life and never found anything too much or too exacting for her to do for the cause of religion. She was noble, generous, kind and lovely to and loved by all. Well can the brothers and sisters say with the poet: "Sister, thou was mild and lovely, Gentle as the summer breeze; Pleasant as the air of evening, As it floats a! mong the trees." Since her death one of the family has written: "She was the best of us all; loving, kind and industrious, better to others than to herself. To liertt (?) is rest, eternal rest." She was buried at Leasburg on the 11th where a large number of friends, neighbors and old schoolmates had gathered to pay her the last sad tribute of respect. MARRIAGE Married at the residence of J. C. Burkes, last Sunday evening at 4 o'clock, Mr. William Drennon and Miss Rena Marsh, both of Riverside. Rev. Phillips officiating. Wherever you dwell, May content be your lot; And friendship like ivy, Encircle your cot, Is the best wish of Samant____ OBITUARY The sad intelligence reached here on Tuesday, that Edw. M. Clark died at his home in Hermann, MO., on the 30th of Nov. 1891, from typhoid fever. The deceased was reared in this county, and from this place enlisted in the 7th Missouri Cavalry. In 1869 he was married to MARY A. GIBSON, daughter of DR. ALEXANDER GIBSON of this place who bore him a son and a daughter, who are both living. He resided for several years in Phelps county where he was elected clerk of the circuit court. He was there admitted to the bar, but finally removed to Gasconade County where he practiced his profession up to the time of his fatal illness. He was an intelligent and able man, a genial and kindhearted citizen, an indulgent father and a faithful husband. His remains were brought to Steelville, and buried from the Baptist church on Wednesday. MR. WM. JOLLEY & MISS ANNA A. FANNING, were married at the residence of MR. JOHN FANNING yesterday, 13 Jan, 1792. (that surely is a typo... probably should be 1892)

    1. [Clarke-Clark] James CLARK/E, born 1790 to 1800, .. anywhere on "east coast" ..
    2. BBFFRRPP
    3. Hello, I'd like to repost my interest in learning the origins of James CLARK/E who was probably born between 1790 and 1800, but I don't know where. In the 1820's, he was living in Little Compton, RI. In 1829, he married a widow, Mrs. Rhoda (MANCHESTER) LAVARE, in Westport, MA, and that is where they lived. They had a daughter born in Westport in ~1837. But, James probably died in the 1840's, as he was not listed in the 1850 Census for Westport, MA, with his wife and teen-age daughter. The first husband of Miss Rhoda MANCHESTER was Epaphroditus LAVARE, and his descendants believe that he was born and raised in VIRGINIA.. and was a Mariner. So, he had migrated from VA to MA and married Rhoda in Westport, MA, in 1819. He died "at sea" in ~1825, I believe.
