Helen, Would you look up FERGUS and see what listing there is in George F Black's book "The Surnames of Scotland". I am not sure how to pursue this question and would invite any assistance: Is FERGUS the name of the clan? Is FERGUSON a sept? It would seem to me that the order would be the clan of FERGUS and the sept of FERGUSON, but I only find a FERGUSON tartan and listings for the clan FERGUSON. I have made the assumption that FERGUS would be the clan, adding the "SON" for son of . . . Can someone clarify this for me as I have been puzzled about this for a long, long time, but never had a query answered satisfactorily. I will appreciate any "light" that can be shared on this issue.
