It looks as though this is originally an English name http://www.camelotintl.com/bin/cgi/names?name=caldow&wild=y It is recorded in Black's "The Surnames of Scotland". The first recorded instance is of one William Caldow in Nedir Mosplat. Black also says that the name may be of local origin, perhaps from Caldow near Corsock, Balbeattie. Since the name seems to have been recorded in England first, perhaps the Scottish town was named after a Caldow who moved there.
