Jennifer, MacDougal and Macdonald are descendant of Somerled. Dugall was Somerled's eldest son, and there are many variants of the name. MacLucas has also many variations, as well as misspellings. MacLucais must be such a variant. I find myself constantly cautioning folks to shut off their late 20th century minds. Throughout the best educated parts of the world we have barely been literate, excepting the wealthy, for a century and a half. In the latter seventy five years of that time we have become more and more 'literal' to a fault. Our forebears were illiterate and what one was 'called' was who he was. To add to that we must also consider that the Celts/Gaels had oral traditions and disdained writing anything down. Amongst the ancient clans only the Druids had a written language and it seems that its use was ceremonially restricted. This anti-writing proscription is the reason the bards were held in such high esteem and required to recite the clans history. Warm regards, Dick Hudson
