    1. [CLANS-L] McLeods, McLemores, McKenzies, McLaurins, and Calhouns
    2. Dear List, I am new to genealogy and I'm trying to build on information given to me by various relatives. It seems that Mississippi was largely populated by people of Scottish descent in the early 1800s, as evidenced by the names on my family tree. Thus far, no one has traced any of these families back to Scotland. Here are the individuals I'm working on: My ggrandfather, Richmond MCLEOD, 7/17/1855-6/26/1921. Married to Sarah Adda CHAIN, 7/27/1859-3/8/1946. Both buried in Mount Olive, Mississippi. Family history says that the McLeods herded sheep on the Isle of Skye and that they entered the US at a port in North Carolina. My ggggrandmother, Sarah Jariah MCLEMORE, born 1806 in Tennessee, married John J. Sellers in 1819, probably in Perry County, Mississippi. My ggggrandmother, Mary MCKENZIE, who was married to Loughten DAVIS. Family lore says that this Davis family was related to Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy. My ggggggrandparents, Daniel MCLAURIN and Nancy CALHOUN, who probably lived near Jamesville, near Simpson County, Mississippi. Their daughter, Mary McLaurin CARR , is buried in Carr's Church Cemetery in Smith County and other Carrs also married McLaurins, probably of the same family. I have read the entries on kilts with interest. My daughter is preparing to dance at her first Highland games and I am making her kilt. I began this rather major project thinking "How hard can this be? It's just a pleated skirt." Well, making a kilt is less like making a pleated skirt and more like tailoring a fine garment--by hand. It's nearly done, and it looks pretty good, so Rachel will be sporting a lovely McLeod tartan. She and I will be going with her troupe to Scotland for a week this summer, so I'm trying to amass as much family history as I can before June. I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks, Mary Anna Evans
