    1. [CLANS-L] "Scotch-Irish
    2. My Scottish friends in Scotland object tto being called Scotch as that is reserved for scotch whiskey. They say the Scotch-Irish are those Irish that have the good sense to recognize the superiority of scotch over Irish whiskey.

    1. [CLANS-L] "Scotch Irish Research"
    2. Patricia Gregg
    3. I have spent less than 6 months delving into genealogy, and do not have the experience of many of you. I have been on a few mail lists only three days and have received some valuable information, and I believe given some out. However, I feel this to be true. Just from the experiences I have had, just finding a name or a location is never enough. Until I can get to know that person, "walked in their steps" I am not satisfied. If we can get into the Who first, then when, where, what, and finally why and how, and help each other, I believe the experience will be richer for us all. Perhaps the information is a little know fact about weather, dress, environment, industry, etc. It could be important to our collective understanding. The experiences of the Scotch-Irish are a much hidden portion of American History. In all my years, I don't remember being taught about them, and the contributions that they made, however, through research, I am amazed. This makes me want to follow their voyage to and to see American as they first saw it. I want to get into their heads, understand their thinking, see how they could survive. Posting hisitorical information for others to see could be a great way to share. In that vein, I will share an important document which could be the starting point for many of you. Posting historical information for others to see could be a great way to share. How fortunate for us that the founding fathers of New Hampshire understood the importance of History, even when it was being made and took steps to preserve the past for us to learn from. Today we are the History of tomorrow, it is this fact that drives us all. We see how very similar we are in our struggles and desires. Perhaps you have a distant relative that was part of the illustrious group. You must understand that not everyone found on this list made the voyage, and many that did not sign did. Copy of the Memorial to Governor Shute 26th day of March, Annoq. Dom 1718. "To His Excellency the Right Honourable Collonel Samuel Shutte, Governor of New England. We whose names are underwritten, Inhabitants of ye North of Ireland, Doe in our own names, and in the names of many others our Neighbours, Gentlemen, Ministers, Farmers, and Tradesmen Commisssionate and appoint our trusty and well beloved Friend, the Reverend Mr. William Boyd of Macasky, to His excellency the Right Hourable Collonel Samuel Shutte governour of New England, and to assure His Excellency of our sincere and hearty Inclination to Transport ourselves to that very excellent and renowned Plantation upon our obtaining from his Excellency Shutte encouragement. And further to act and Doe in our Names as his Prudence shall direct. Given under our hands this 26th day of March, Annoq. Dom 1718. Following were the signatures or marks of the persons. The names that follow were copied by the historian of Londonderry, E.L. Parker in 1890 and then again by Charles Knowles Bolton in 1910. "Below this address are the autograph signatures, arranged in eight columns of equal length. Where Mr. Parker's rendering of a name differs from my own I have given Parker's form below in italics. A question mark indicates that although we may agree, the form is still open to question. An asterisk marks names beginning with a small written b. 1. [CLANS-L] Help on locating clans
    2. I am having a rough time finding the clan, or for that matter the descendants, of the name WOOD in Scotland. I know that there are a lot of WOODS and WOODs in England, but our family hails from Scotland, although they may have been transplanted there. Does anyone have record of the name WOOD in Scotland clans? It is believed that it was originally O'WOOD. Any help would be appreciated! Genji

    2. My mother's family are McSwains. I am told that the McSwains might have come from the Isle of Skye. I have also been told that McSwain name may have been McSween, McSweeny or Sweeney in Scotland before the McSwains came to America. Also I am told that the McSwain, (McSweenn, etc.) were a chip off the McDonald Clan. Does anyone have any information on this?

    3. Hello, I am already a member of the Kennedy Society of North America. I just recently found out my gg grandfather was John Stewart born in Ireland after 1810-came to PA and married a Mary Johnston (Johnson). I am still digging on both families, plus some other Scots. My husband is a Baird for sure--John Baird from Scotland who came to the colonies in 1683 on probably the Caledonia. He married Mary Bedent and they settled in Topenemus, NJ. Sons included Andrew, Zebulon, David, William, John. One of their grandsons was Bedent, who was part of the Jersey Blues who took part in the "Tea Party" Donna Kennedy Nichols

My GINGLES (pronounced "Jingles") were a family under the McALISTER clan. My Samuel GINGLES received a land grant from the English Crown for land in NC. Samuel married Margaret McALISTER and came to America in 1754 via Antrim, N. Ireland. The McALISTERs were of Kintyre, Scotland. Does anyone know of the GINGLES/McALISTER connection? About why the transplanting to N. Ireland? Why they should have received a land grant from the English Crown? I looked in the McALISTER info in www.tartans.com amd there is very little info. With Margaret and Samuel came Angus McALISTER and Charles McALISTER to the Philadelphia port of entry. Angus and Charles stayed with their families in York Co., PA>Taneytown, MD. Samuel and Margaret journed down to Mecklenberg Co., NC to establish their land grant. Please help with info. Sheila GINGLES Lorenz in San Diego --part0_917886643_boundary--

    3. Joe wrote a nice essay here: "Introduction to the History of > Clan Chattan - Part I", Chattan of course, referring to the CAT. Below, are bits of Joe's essay: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Re Shaw MacDuff: > As a reward for his services, he was made > Keeper of the Royal Castle of Inverness and received the lands ot Petty and > Beachley with the forest of Strathdearn in the valley of the Findhorn River. > The early chiefs are said to have resided in Inverness Castle, but Petty was > their early home, and there through the centuries the family burial-place has > been situated and is still the resting place of the Mackintosh Chiefs. The > clan did not come into possession of the area around Loch Moy until 1336. > I too have family buried at Petty; it is a beautiful elevated burial ground, looking down to Stuart Castle. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++> > Feuds With Comyns and Camerons I'll be polite and steer clear of those. All in the past But very much in the present, is the neglect I saw at the Petty church and burial ground, in 1990. Will someone please bring me up to date as to the present condition? The church then was disused, a rear entry door busted and flooring uplifted. The pipe organ blower motor and attachments littered the lawn. The two large black cats were later removed from the church side. Were these stolen? We were told that these were taken by Mackintosh. If the site is still neglected, then surely it is a duty on Clan Mackintosh to put things right. A worthy project, yes? +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ > The Mackintoshes emerged victorious in this > fight, but the Camerons nevertheless remained firmly in possession of Loch > Arkaig and Glenloy. That sounds like a good outcome :~) Cheers.......... -- ALISTAIR M. CAMERON, Assistant at Mittagong N.S.W. F.H. Centre

    2. In a message dated 1/31/99 9:57:11 PM Pacific Standard Time, mcollins@sfths.sft434.k12.ks.us writes: << How would one find if an ancestor did indeed belong to a clan, and what would the benefit have been in 1890-1920 Scotland? >> The Clan system as it was known up until 1746 was well broken up during this period so this ancestor was descendant of a clan just as you are. I would contact the Hume and Douglas Societies to find out exactly how your particular surnames became associated. Families of different surnames became associated with the Clans for many different reasons and not evryone with an associated name is necessarily related to the Clan. In some instances they are but not always. This is why genealogy is so important. For instance the name Miller is a sept of Macfarlane. It is also a trade name that is used throughout the British Isles. Are all Millers MacFarlanes? No. How do some Millers fit into the Macfarlanes? The answer is that the Macfarlane Chief's Miller (a very prestigous trade because he would grind all the grain that the Chiefs tennants gave to the Chief for rent and turned it into cash) married the Chiefs daughter strengthening their business alliance. This Miller then swears loyalty to this Chief and he is granted arms and become Duine Usail (honored person) of Macfarlane. He has his own house, gillies etc. Their Children are now sept of the Clan because thay are just as much related to their grandfather the Chief as the children of the Chiefs eldest son who would succeed him. So, if you are a Miller , can trace your ancestry to Macfarlane Lands and find you are part of this Line. You are a Macfarlane. This is just one example and there are a dozen other ways a name can become associated with a clan. So it is very important to do your research so that you will get the most value out of your genealogy efforts. There are many resources on the Clan Macfarlane website under links that will lead you to Hume and Douglas. The url is: www.macfarlane.org Hope this helps.
