You're right Rich...the old DAR records are filled with errors, mainly Bible records, which many used to qualify. They thought a family Bible record was 100% accurate. The problem was, most people couldn't spell & Bible's were hit & miss with family members, and dates. I didn't qualify for the DAR with a Bible record. I qualified with military records (birth certificates, death certificates). I had 5 ancestors in the Revolution. I had most of my genealogy before computers, and I can document all of it. I've been looking at genealogy sites on computer since 1992. I also haven't put my family histories on-line because some people take it & run, and never acknowledge the source. Anyway, once in awhile I'll send someone some family info., and if they don't believe me, it's up to them to research it. I have a lot of old photos (not on Internet). I also have original court records, written on hand-made paper with quill & ink from Kentucky, 1802-1824....none of them are on Internet. I think I lucked out when I started researching families. Good for you, Jan. I just began my family research last fall and am having lots of fun doing it. I am finding very little has been done in my family and most of my direct cousins aren't interested. I have, however, found a couple of third cousins who have put some data out there and I have emailed, called, and otherwise shared information with them and been blessed to find them! I encourage people to put some kind of information out there for us newbies so we have a starting point. Even if it's just an email address for those of us looking for long lost family. I don't have the money to spend on ordering death certificates and documentation research but have had success through my library and kind people on the net who have given me clues. My greatest source of information so far has been my ancestor's civil war pension records. For $37 I got death and birth records, mother's maiden name, family, service, physical description, occupation etc. It gave the best "bang for the buck". Meanwhile thanks for everyone sharing and, even if you are not related to me, it's fun to read about your discoveries and enthusiasm!
