Hi Everybody, I found an 1845 marriage record for Rachel Elizabeth Boyd and James Alexander Downing in the Family Data Collection of Ancestry.com last nite. They and several other Boyds were listed as being married in South, North Carolina. "South" is listed each time under the category of "City." However, I did see that all other names listed under "City" were actually county names. Can anyone help me out on this??? I have not been able to locate a town/city in NC - either extinct or current - with the name of "South". And I have not been able to locate any county name that includes "South". Maria

They only help I offer is that my neighboring county is know as James City County. It's a colonial name and I think that was a custom--to make a county out of what had been a colonial city.
