    3. Jan, Karen and et al, For some historical information the Scottish and English crowns were united in 1603 when James VI of Scotland also ascended to the British throne as Queen Elizabeth I's heir. A century later in 1703 the Parliaments of Scotland and England were united. After the last Jacobite Uprising in 1745 in Scotland Highland Dress, weaponry and yes even bagpipes were outlawed. In order to wear their Tartans and carry weapons many Highlanders joined the British Army and made up all or most of the Highland Regiments such as the Black Watch and the famed 42nd Highlanders comprised mainly of the Highland Stewarts, Camerons, MacIntoshes and MacLachlans. So by the 1750's and 60's these mainly Scottish Regiments of HRH George III were in England's American Colonies. Yours Aye, David D. Boyd

    2. I do appreciate it when complicated information is given so succinctly I can retain it. Thank you. Were there any records kept of membership in the Scottish Regiments ?(I remember my grandmother referring to them fondly as "the ladies from hell", a name apparently given by their enemies--or maybe the Brits.) My impression is that the Andrew Boyd of Frederick MD was not military at the time of his emigration. (1746-7.)
