I have several S-I families early in PA. They include: Patterson; Buchanan; Robinson; Armstrong; Boyd; Work; Dunlap. I will be glad to share with anyone "in the family." Thanks for the comments on the website. Best wishes, Linda Smith www.lindaslineage.com
Two worthy websites on Rootsweb World Connect tell that the early Dunlaps were driven out of Scotland and into Ireland. From there they came to America. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:541817& id=I26265427 Mentions will of Samuel Dunlap found in Carroll Co. Historical Society, Carroll Co, OH. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2140971&id=I10022 The following book by Thompson Woodward also mentions Samuel Dunlap family: Woodward, Thompson Elwyn. The Ancestors and Descendants of Davis Woodward (1806-1882) and his wife Mary Boyd (1810-1890). Published Hyattsville, MD, 1958. 68 pp. Filmed by LDS in Washington, D.C., 1985. Found in US/CAN film area #1429813, item 4. My ancestor was Mary, the sister of William DUNLAP. She married Samuel WORK. I have not pursued this family’s records into Ireland/Scotland except to know they are 5th Great Grandparents. Best wishes, Linda Smith www.lindaslineage.com
Linda, Nice looking website. I was looking to see what you had on the Dunlop's in early PA, but I couldn't see a link to your genealogy tree. Is their a way to find out what you have on the early Scotch-Irish in PA? Thanks, Colin

Linda - This is the same Samuel Dunlop, but he was born in Scotland. I have no record of him living in Ireland. Family history just said he sailed from Ulster to the U.S. Do you have records for him in Ireland? Did he own land, was he a merchant, etc? His son William is my ancestor. Fellow listers: We're looking for a John Boyd who married a Margaret O'Neill. They were probably born in the 1830's or 40's. They never left Northern Ireland. Among their children was Thomasena Boyd born 1866. We're looking for a John Hampton (1860-1936) who married Thomasena Boyd (1866-1942) in June 1889. John emigrated in 1876 and Thomasena in 1886. We hope to find out where they were born in Northern Ireland. Thank you, Jim Gunn
Hi Jan I have a Janet Boyd born in 1816 in Scotland, died 1889 to John BOYD and Jean ROBB. She was the 10th child of 17 children of which 4 were still born. Any connection do you think? Hi Ross - thanks for replying. My Janet Boyd was Chr. 17 Dec 1704, daughter of Thomas Boyd & Agnes Lammie, who were married 4 Oct. 1690 (Kilmarnoch, Ayr, Scotland). Janet married Samuel Dunlop 27 Feb. 1735 in Fenwick, Ayr. She had the following Boyd siblings: Jean - Chr 19 Dec 1691 Agnes - Chr 23 Nov 1693 Thomas - Chr 16 May 1696 John - Chru 4 Feb 1700 Margaret - chr 1 Nov. 1702 Janet - chr 17 Dec 1704 *mine Elizabeth - chr 26 Sept 1708 Then it's a dead end with the family...I don't know if they all left the area. Samuel Dunlop who moved to Lancaster, PA. in 1743, showed a 2nd wife Sarah in his Will 1774 in PA. Samuel's youngest William moved from Lancaster to Brooks Co., W. VA 1776. Colin- I forgot to say that the reason I put that in about the militia is that I do not know if John Boyd was a Captain or not........but he might have been ranked in the militia. Also it says in the book that he probably did not come with his father - but probably just a little later after marrying. Maria
HI- I have a Capt. Robert Boyd who is the first Boyd ancestor in the book. He was probably born in Irvine Scotland and after a short time in Ireland he moved to America. The book says, "The time in Ireland could not have been long, for if Robert's first child, John was born in Scotland in the late 1720's, then Robert had moved to Ireland after this. If he was in Pennsylvania (Cumberland Valley) by about 1737, his stay in Ireland was likely no more than 10 years, at the most....................Robert and his oldest son, John, joined the militia to fight the Indians." According to the book - the above Capt Robert Boyd was b abt 1705-9 m? and d abt 1761 in Cumberland PA. The above John Boyd was b between 1725 and 1730 m. Mary? and his will was signed in 1769. John's son - Robert Boyd b PA and d SC - is my line. The Boyd Family from Capt. Robert Boyd through James Davis Boyd and Others by Carl L. Oakes, Jr. Aug 1995 Maria
Maria, Does that book mention when Capt. John Boyd came to America? I hadn't seen that Boyd book mentioned before and I'm looking for early Boyds in or near to Philadelphia circa 1717-1720. Thanks, Colin Brooks

Hi Mike, Here is what I found on your family in the Andrew Boyd Book. You'll need to do your own research and prove all of this because, as you'll see, there are questions in the information provided in the book. Austin Boyd, b. August 1879 Parents of Austin are Joseph A. Boyd (b. 1826) and Georgia Ann Dunaway (b. Feb. 1839) They married ca 1872. (This was his second wife.) She was a daughter of Annis Tulis Greer and Fielding H. Dunaway. (There are lots of Dunaways married to the Boyds in this area.) Joseph married (1) Nancy Ready, b. ca 832. She was a daughter of Mary (Polly) Thornhill and John (Jack) Ready. "Census records indicate that he may have been called both John Boyd and Joseph Boyd" Children of Joseph and Georgia: A. (on census) Boyd, b. ca 1873 Magdalene Boyd, b. December 1875 C. Boyd, b. 1875 Zeb D. Boyd, b. May 12, 1876 Barbara Boyd, b. April 1878; married Milton Harris Alexander Austin Boyd, b. August 1879 Oliver Lee Boyd, b. February 22, 1883; d. December 11, 1953 Elvin Boyd, b. March 1883 1900 Census - Pike Co., Miss., Beat 2 #46: John A. Boyd, b. August 1826, age 73, b. Miss., father b. Tenn.; mother b. Ga. Georgie Ann, b. Feb. 1839, 61; Magdlene, b. December 1875, 24; Zeb, b. May 1877, 23 Barbara b. April 1888, 22 Austin, b. Aug. 1879, 20 Oliver b. Jan. 1882, 18 Elvin, b. March 1883, 17 Parents of Joseph A. Boyd are Isaac Boyd (b. September 3, 1801, d. before 1840) and Nancy Stacy (b. 1805, d. 1879) Isaac Boyd was a son of Andrew Boyd (b.1770 in Ireland [according to book, some think it could have been Scotland]) There is a note in the book regarding children of Isaac Boyd: "1840 census indicates that Isaac Boyd had seven children-4 sons and 3 daughters. The following are assumed and/or included in census records as children of Nancy S. Boyd. Further research is suggested." I have a complete digital copy of the book if you'd like one. Contact me off list and I'll send more info.
