    3. Charles, I descend from a William Westbrook and Dorcas Moffat/Moffet from Virginia whose descendants came North to Ohio rather than going south and west. I'd like to see what you have on Westbrook. See what little Westbrook data I have here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~confido/westbrook.html Richard G. 1. Boyd migrations

    3. I think that this migration project is extremely useful. Had I had the insights, gained in just the past few weeks, in my early searches, I'd have progressed a lot faster than I have. My oldest known (Archibald) Boyd (d 1820) appeared in Chester, SC in 1801 when he bought property from his father-in-law, Robert Jamison. Robert, in contrast, can be traced in South Carolina back to 1779 through property records. They probably migrated from either Pennsylvania or Maryland; inconsistent family documents lead to both. The same documents say they were from Ballymena. Brent Holcomb, genealogist in Columbia, suspects that, like many who settled in Upper South Carolina in the late 1700's, Archibald came from the Chester PA. As early as 1749, the region of which Chester South Carolina was a part, experienced a great throng of people who came and settled during the twenty-five years prior to the Revolution. White-topped Conestoga wagons, dubbed "the vehicle of empire" formed trains southward from Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina. They came by way of the Great Wagon Road from Pennsylvania through the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. From there they followed Indian trails or made their own. Some of the settlers were men of means in the middle colonies and came to Carolina for more accessible lands and more freedom from the strictness of Quaker policies in Pennsylvania and surrounding settlements. Surely the Proclamation of 1763 kept some of them from their desired migration to the west. So here is a time frame 1749 - 1800 that South Carolina's northern frontier was opening and a flood of immigrants came. Another migration out of South Carolina to Ohio, Indiana and Iowa (among other places) occurred from 1830 - 1855. A large population of Irish Presbyterians settled in South Carolina. In 1727, a near-famine struck Ireland and the two following years were so abnormal that the awe-stricken people believed them to be either "heralds of eternity or vehicles of the wrath of God." Three years of dearth had a devastating effect on a country whose powers of resistance had already been undermined. The woes of the Presbyterians were particularly galling. Not only were they taxed to support a church not their own but most of them were either employed in some branch of the textile industry or were farmers. Business was bad in one and rents too high in the other. About this time, the Reverend William Martin (from Ballymoney) received a "call" to come to South Carolina. Presbyterian tradition is that he decided to go and, following an incident of violence resulting from high rents, he preached a fiery sermon calling on all his congregation to accompany him. He said as a minister he could not stand idly by and await the violence and ruin that would come. He proposed that the congregation, under his leadership, emigrate to South Carolina where they could get free land and live as free men. The congregation, having nothing to lose by it, agreed. Reverend Martin did go and took with him a party of some 467 families on five ships. Once settled, these Reformed Associates Presbyterians made "covenants" that kept them from belonging to any society (E.G the Masons), but God's and among many other covenants, they would not own slaves. The winds of dissention over the issue forced many to leave the state. They were know as Seceders and they traveled and settled in groups. Several of Archibald Boyd's daughters married into families that left around 1835 for Ohio and they ended up in Iowa. Their husband's surnames were Harbison, Gillespie, McCullough and Westbrook. I have made the connection to many of these Midwestern families if anyone has an interest. Charles Boyd Atlanta

    3. Does anyone know anything about Samuel R Boyd, b. 1813 in Kentucky. He married Louisa Jane Haskins b. 1820 in Illinois. They married abt 1838 in Illinois? Rita Carroll RichBoyd <RichBoyd@SpeednetLLC.com> wrote: Below are the migration patterns of my Boyd family. Why not tell us yours? --------------------------- My earliest known ancestor John Boyd married Margaret Long in Boston, Massachusetts, 11 April 1731 but most of their five sons were born further west in Hopkinton in Worcestor County in the 1730s, 40s, and 50s. We are not certain where John came from but it was either N. Ireland or Scotland. He could have come with the 1718 migrations out of Northern Ireland but we don't know for sure. In the 1760s they all moved even further west to Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, where some of them remained. One line went to New York. In the 1770s one of the sons, Abraham Boyd, moved up into Wilmington, Vermont, north of Shelburne Falls which today is a "hop skip and a jump" but in those days was a long journey. We are not sure why he went to Vermont except that he fought at the Battle of Bennington during the American Revolution, and may have like the area. One of his six sons (Luther) made the giant leap West sometime in 1822 when he landed in Ohio, near Columbus. He left Vermont in 1813 but doesn't show up anywhere until 1822 in Columbus, Ohio where he married Easther English. During the years 1813 - 1822 we don't know where he was. There was a Luther Boyd who fought in the war of 1812 but was listed as signing up in New York (which is another hop, skip, and a jump) from Vermont. We don't know if he was our Luther, but think it was. His son Luther Jr., stayed in Columbus, Ohio all of his short life but his son Richard Boyd went to Peru, Indiana where he lived most of his life and died in 1934. His oldest son, Albert Boyd carried on the westward migration and went to Des Moines, Iowa about 1900 where he married and had a son. Another son, my grandfather, George S. Boyd had the wanderlust and from the 1900s to 1929 followed the oil wells in Arksansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas for work. Most of his children were born in Louisiana and Texas. George S. and his brother John Henry Boyd ended up in Michigan which explains why I was born here. George came back to Michigan in 1929 after the stock market crash and during the Depression. My Boyd family left relatives all over New England from Massachusetts to Vermont, New York, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, and etc. Over the years (and especially with the advent of the Internet) I have met several of these distant Boyd cousins in many of the above areas. 3. I really appreciate everyone's interest. The information on Jackson Boyd has given me hope. I always kind of thought that if the story is true of a family of brothers coming to Charleston, IL to confront the Boyd's, that it must have involved ill will over the war between the states. 2. About the Civil War Records. I went to the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints church library. You can find the address in the yellow pages of your phone book under the name of the church. They have the Civil War Pension Indexes on film, which you can view there at their library. They are in alphabetical order by the name of the pensioner. I found my John P. Boyd. There were several pages of John Boyds. They have the application forms that you send to the National Archives to receive a copy of the application. Unfortunately for me, they could not find the one for John P. Boyd. They said that when they moved from one building to another about 50 years ago several boxes of their records never did find their way to the new location. So, I was disappointed. 3. Jeff, there are a number of ways to find information on the Civil War. Nearly any large library that has a genealogy area should have the Civil War indices, there are more than a dozen volumes. another way is to contact a local Civil War Society and or the local Historical Society. They would either have the collection mentioned or point you in the right direction. You will ultimately be guided to the National Archives. this is now taking orders for pension and service records on-line, however you will need to locate the record and call numbers to order. You may want to consider taking a class, local or on-line, or getting a book in researching military records, there is a good deal of information in these old records and it is easy to miss the one you want if you are not familiar with what is available and where it is located. 3. It would appear that Jeff's family tradition's, if this is the right Jackson Boyd, is pretty close. On the 1870 census, Granville twp., Jasper Co. IL, Jackson is no longer in the household and neither are any of the son's. The list includes: Sarah age 40; Sarah age 16; Manerva age 13; Saphrona age 10; Martha age 8; Amanda age 7. The son's could be married or apprenticed and living in other households. Jane in Ohio

    3. Well, this is really interesting. Over the years I have made stabs at finding out more about them. I have not had much luck however, I've tried to use some of the sites posted here, and other resources, even the Mormon church. So, how would I go about finding the civil war records? I agree with the fact of so many of the same name, especially James. Thanks to everyone Jeff ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jane C. 3. My Boyds did not do much migrating after they came to the USA. However, I would surely like to find out more about where they did come from in Ireland (and probably earlier from Scotland), and if anyone has any ancestry over there that might look similiar with mine - that part of my ancestry is virtually a blank. This is the way the story goes. My grgrgrandfather was John BOYD who was married to ? CAMBELL - probably married in the very early 1800's in Ireland, but location is unknown. This John BOYD and CAMPBELL-wife had six children, three of whom, seemingly, never left Ireland. The other three children - Mary, William, and Jane - did come to St. Lawrence County, NY, probably in the 1830-40's. William BOYD was my grgrandfather who had been married to Susana DUNN in Ireland, and they had a son, David BOYD, b. about 1838. Susanna apparently died in Ireland. (I have been in touch with the descendants of David BOYD in northern NY, but they really do not know anything about any of this ancestry.) Sometime after that (1840's?) William BOYD came over from Ireland into the Town of Lisbon in St. Lawrence County, NY. The first that we really know anything of him is that he did purchase some property there in about 1854. By that time he had married Mary Jane THOMPSON and had one son, Wm. Henry BOYD, my grandpa, born in 1853. In Dec. 1855 another son was born, Robert John BOYD. In April 1856 Mary Jane THOMPSON-BOYD died. (Sometime shortly after that, William BOYD married Margaret CHAPMAN. Margaret was the sister of a grgrgrandmother in another branch of my family, the McLEANs. Young Robert J. BOYD died in 1872. William BOYD died in 1884. Cemetery stone shows 1817-1884 for him, however family members declare that he was born in 1807.) Wm. Henry BOYD married Jennie McCONNELL about 1880. Now back to the other BOYDs. We do not know when Mary BOYD and Jane BOYD came over, but it must have been earlier than when brother William did. "The World Book of Boyds" lists a Mary and Jane BOYD as having come over into St. John, NB, Canada, in 1834 - these could be mine. By 1840 Mary was married to a William HALL, and they had 6 or 7 children born over the next 20 years there in the Township of Lisbon, NY, according to Census. I have not found any contacts as descendants of William & Mary BOYD-HALL. (Mary lived 1810-1879.) Sister Jane BOYD showed up there in Ogdensburg/Tn.Oswegatchie Census in 1850 and later. She married an Andrew MEGAN/MEGHAN, and they had one boy. (Jane BOYD-MEGAN lived ca1815-1873, but I cannot find where she is buried. Most of these ancestors of mine are buried in the Campbell Cemetery in Lisbon Township.) If you see anything familiar to your ancestry in all of this, please let me know. Besides BOYD, I am also looking for connections with CAMPBELL, THOMPSON, McLEAN, McCONNELL, HALL, & MEGAN. Thank you. 3. Jeff, There is a Jackson Boyd age 26, on the 1850 census for Sommerset Division 1, Pulaski Co. KY. In his household there is: wife, Sarah age 26; Aron age 6; Elizabeth age 4; Polly age 2; Jerry age 1. On the 1860 census, for Division 2, Pulaski Co. KY: Jackson age 36; Sarah age 35; Elisabeth age 15; Aaron age 12; Polly age 11; James age 8; Sarah age 7; Minerva age 4; Sophrona age 5months. I am jumping to the conclusion that you do not have access to any census records. You may want to check for Civil War pension and service records for Jackson and his son Aaron, both could have served. There are a number of Jackson Boyd's, so a word of caution is in order. I hope this helps. Happy hunting. Jane in Ohio

    3. Well, I don't honestly know a whole lot more. My great grandfather's name was James I believe his father's name was Jackson, and he came from " Kentucky country" as is listed on a death certificate. Family lore has it that Jackson and his family came up to Illinois from Kentucky after the civil war ( although there is a story that Jackson died before he got to Illinois, and his widow and their children continued) Anyway, supposedly they came to Illinois and settled near Charleston ( Coles county) I don't know how many brothers sisters there were. Story has it that several brothers from another family came up looking for them. They found one of the Boyd's in a pool hall in Charleston and a shoot out took place. All concerned died of their wounds. My great grandfather was a farmer in Crawford county near the town of Oblong. That is all I have to go on, I have tried finding more out, but have not had any luck. One of his brothers was Frank who was killed as a young man. Another brother was Aaron. I don't know of any living Boyd's that can shed any more light on it. Jeff ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jane C. 3. I have not had much luck finding my Boyd ancestors. My great-grandmother was Mary "Molly" J. Boyd born about 1854 in Ashland County, Ohio. She married Edmund Castor. Her parents were Robert C. Boyd and Anne Johnston. Robert was from Wayne County, Ohio and Anne was from Germantown, Philadelphia County, PA. I think Robert's parents were John Boyd, Jr. and Ann Baine but I have no proof. I know there were connections to Holmes County, Ohio. Lola Thompson

    3. Folks, It has been a long time since I posted anything to this list. My earliest known BOYD ancestor is James BOYD b. abt. 1740 in Knocknavaddy Rock, Dungannon, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland and m. in 1760 Nancy WEIR b. about 1750 in Cookstown, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. In Dec. 1794 James and Nancy with their children, Samuel born abt. 1783 and William born abt 1785, boarded a cargo ship, The IRISH VOLUNTEER, which was bound for Charleston, South Carolina. Nancy was pregnant when they departed and gave birth on March 17, 1795 to a girl they named Margaret on board the ship in Charleston Harbor. The family originally settled in Abbeville District, SC and later moved to Laurens County, SC some time prior to 1808. In 1808 James petioned for and was granted US Citizenship. In 1816 their son , William, my 3rd Great - Grandfather, met and married Elizabeth Burton ,b. abt 1798 in Laurens County, SC. the entire family then migrated to Hall County, GA abt 1817 where all of William and Elizabeth's Children were born. Their children are as follows James b. 1817,Samuel Newton b. 1818 , Wier, my 2nd Great-Grandfather, b.September 14. 1820 and Rachel b. 1823. From Hall County they moved to Gwinnett County where Elizabeth died in 1826. The family then moved to Forsyth County and finally to Dahlonega, Lumpkin County, GA. David D. Boyd CBI member 749
