Hello All: I hope I am not "out of line" forwarding this URL to all of you. Maybe some of your ancestors lived in Edinburgh at one time or another, thus they might have been "?Lucky?" enough to be mentioned in this newspaper at one time or another. Anyway, I'm taking a chance forwarding this URL and if I'm not supposed to do this, would the Listmaster please inform me of this and I shall endeavor to try to not do this in the future. Historic Milestone for Scotsman The Edinburgh-based Scotsman newspaper has been published for over 187 years and now the organisation has launched a digital archive of every issue from 25 January 1817 to 1900. This web-based electronic archive displays each article as it originally appeared and will shortly be extended to 1950 and eventually to the present day. History, whether on the world stage or about individuals will be available. The assassination of President Lincoln, the death of Sir Walter Scott, the trial of Burke and Hare or the exploits of the Light Brigade at Balaclava sit side-by-side with genealogical information about our Scottish forebears who made it to the pages of the Scotsman for one reason or another. The Scotsman claims to be the first paper in the UK to do this. Of course, the service is not free - a 24 Hour Pass will initially cost around £6 or a 48 Hour Pass provides two full days of unlimited access for around £10. These introductory rates will last until January 2005. See http://archive.scotsman.com/ William Lipham dobi@comcast.net
For those interested in British Records: CROSSING THE POND A new pay-per-view Web site for British records is in its final testing phase and will launch Dec. 9, according to site spokesperson Charles Murdoch. Familyrelatives.org (http://www.familyrelatives.org) will offer more than 300 million General Register Office (GRO) records of birth, marriage and death indexes for England and Wales. Transcriptions of more than 150 million records from 1866 to 1920 will be fully searchable by surname, first name, district or area, year and depending upon the period, by mother's maiden name, spouses name, date of birth and age at death. Transcriptions of records for 1921 to 1983 are searchable on surname and first name. Sixty credits, called units, cost $10; visitors will spend one to four credits to access a record. The 1837 to 2002 indexes also are available from 1837Online.com (http://www.1837online.com)--you can view, save and print up to 50 pages of images for about $9. The subscription site BMD Index (http://www.bmdindex.co.uk) has the index, too, as well as birth records from 1880. A year's access costs about $28. The indexes on both sites are searchable by first and last name. *** Reprinted with permission from Family Tree Magazine Email Update, copyright 2004 F+W Publications Inc. Irish Pensions Index http://clanboyd.info "The Old Age Pension Act was introduced in Ireland in 1908. This meant that people over a certain age were guaranteed a pension from the state. However, because the compulsory registration of births had only begun in 1864, claimants of the pension were unable to provide a birth certificate to prove their age. The government therefore found it necessary to establish a person's age by allowing a search to be made of the 1841 and 1851 census returns." "The claimant of the pension would give the name of the Townland and Parish where he/she was born or resided in at the time of the 1841/51 census, a search would be made of that townland's census returns and the result recorded. In some cases the family would not be found and so only the result "No trace" was entered. However, on many occasions the search was successful. In these cases the additional information could state only the age of applicant at the time of the census, but, in many records the names and ages of every person living there is supplied...." "You will see a list of all available records that contain the surname you searched. You will see the record number, the name of the applicant and the county in which they lived. Each record has the applicant's name, their parents names or the name of the person/s with which they resided, and in some cases anyone else living in the household. Note: This means that the applicant may not have the surname you are looking for, but the full record will contain someone with that surname." Thanks to Karen from Ohio for this data.
Up until 1858, all wills had to be proved (formally approved) by church and other courts. The Prerogative Court of Canterbury, the most important of these courts, dealt with the relatively wealthy individuals living mainly in the south of England and most of Wales (originally the ecclesiastical province of Canterbury). We Americans hang together...no matter what happens. My youngest son Kyle is back in Baghdad again, in the Green Zone. He came home in June. He was home in Alaska for the summer, then off he went again. He's working 16 hour days (24-7), again. He gets a ride to the Army mess hall for meals, and he sleeps in a mobile home. He loves what he's doing in Iraq...keeping the military computers working & secure. Hello Just noticed that 10% of the proceeds of some of Boyd's Coffee Company blends goes directly to Habitat for humanity. That is good news. Here in Presque Isle County, Michigan we are building our 9th Habitat for humanity home. That is not too bad for our county is sparsely populated. While I can't do as much work as I used to be able to, I still help with the plumbing and etc for the habitat homes. Richard G. Boyd
