    3. Jerri Lynn and I wish you the best for the year 2005. We hope you make some huge strides with your family research. In fact--why don't we post our brick walls to this list now. Everybody has one. Mine is below. Please type Brick Walls in the subject line. =================================================== My earliest ancestor is John Boyd who married Margaret(Jennie)Long in Suffolk county, Boston Massachusetts 11 April 1731. I can't seem to get back to Ireland or Scotland with my Boyds. But I have them traced forward down to today. I don't know who John's father is. I have always thought it was Capt. James Boyd who fought in the Scot's Dutch Brigade in Holland. A few years ago I purchased the 3 volume set of books on the history brigade. I found Capt. James Boyd in the records and his brother Charles but no family data at all. The last record of Capt. James is in 1704 when Arthur S. Boyd claims he went to Ulster in Ireland. Arthur S. Boyd Jr's 1924 book "History of the Boyd Clan" says Capt. James had 3 sons, James, William and John who came to the Colonies or New England during 1720s. He claims one of these sons, James, went into Maine (Arthur's ancestor)but he shows no proof this James is a son of Capt. James Boyd. He also states that William Boyd disembarked ship on Block Island, Rhode Island and that John Boyd entered Boston. And therein lies my dilema. I can't prove my John Boyd is this John Boyd who married Margaret Long. Some have said that my John Boyd probably came to New England with the Scots-Irish migrations starting 1718. But these Scots settled in New Hampshire. Did my John Boyd prefer the city life? More opportunities there? I don't know but he left Taunton, Mass and settled in Upton, Mass near Worcestor. In 1862 he is living in Shelburne Falls, Mass many miles further inland and doesn't seem to be a part of the Scots-Irish settlements. Does anyone have a John Boyd in very early Massachusetts? Richard G. Boyd

    3. Evelyn, I just got word from a distant cousin Ron who is from the line of Jane "Boyd" McDonald, sister of my g-grandfather. He said that John Boyd's parents Robert Boyd and Jane Campbell lived around Castleblaney, Monaghan, Ireland. This information came from Civil War documentation in Lisbon Town Clerks' office. I spend my lunch hours at work searching every census yr of St. Lawrence County for Boyds, McDonalds and any other name that falls into the Boyd's family tree and any other names that appear interesting for one reason or another. I haven't had much time this year to do much research, however, hoping the year 2005 will be better for my researching. I need to go back through all my old documentation I have saved down through the years and see if I find any links that wouldn't fit previously. I will be so glad when I find our connection as I have always felt that it was there and still do. Just have to dig a little deeper. Right now, I better head for bed or I will not be able to get up for Church in the morning. In our Sunday School class we are in the study of Angels written by Billy Graham. It is so amazing to know that we have Angels watching over us. I pray that your angel watches over you tonight and brings you safely through the morning light. Hope your Christmas was the best and your New Year bring you an abundance of blessings. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Connie

    3. FYI NO RICH UNCLES EITHER. On another fraud front, many genealogists have been contacted by perpetuators of what's known as the Nigerian Advance Fee Fraud or "4-1-9" scheme -- so named after the section of the Nigerian penal code that addresses fraud schemes. These are often quite creative as family historians are discovering. A large number of victims are enticed into believing they have been singled out from the masses (often by using your family names) to share in some multi-million dollar windfall profits. Don't fall for such frauds either. Read this online public awareness advisory: http://www.secretservice.gov/alert419.shtml * * * REPRINTS. 3. FYI FOILING THE PHISHERS. Phishing is a growing form of online fraud. It blends old-fashioned confidence scams with innovations in technological trickery. The best way to avoid becoming a victim is to remember that real companies almost never send e-mail asking you to submit any personal data. Phishers use "spoofed" [fake] e-mails and fraudulent websites designed to fool you into divulging personal financial data such as credit card numbers, account usernames and passwords, Social Security numbers, etc. By hijacking the trusted brands of well-known banks, online retailers and credit card companies, phishers can fool you. They often include fancy graphics, trademark symbols, and an authentic- looking e-mail address in the "from" line, but all of these things can be faked easily. One of the easiest ways to tell that it comes from a phiser is if the message tries to scare you into giving up personal and financial information by saying that your account needs to be verified, updated or confirmed. If you think a message might be legitimate, contact the organization by phone or open a new Internet browser window and type in the company's Web address. Do not cut and paste material from suspicious e-mail messages and never reply to a suspected phiser. Be smart. Be safe.
