I need to know more about this Andrew Boyd of Frederick Co., MD. My gr.gr.gr. grandfather was named Andrew Boyd. His son William is my gr.gr grandfather and lived many years in Monongalia Co. (W) Va. William had brothers named Andrew and Archibald. From a court record in Monongalia Co. I have learned that the father Andrew had a wife named Margaret. The 1850 census says William was born in Maryland in 1771 and died in (W) Va. in 1856. I would love to be able to link them. Andrew died around 1816. Margaret lived into the 1830s. If you have a good server, with filters, you won't get viruses. It sounds like Roots-L isn't prepared to filter either, and I'm surprised they still use only plain text. It doesn't sound like they have upgraded their system. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rich" <richboyd@speednetllc.com> To: <CLANBOYD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 04, 2005 8:55 PM Subject: Re: [Boyd] Brits, Scots and Scots Irish > Jan, > > That is still the case. Thank you David. I thought I had heard something about that. A century later in 1703 the Parliaments of Scotland and England were united. After the last Jacobite Uprising in 1745 in Scotland Highland Dress, weaponry and yes even bagpipes were outlawed. In order to wear their Tartans and carry weapons many Highlanders joined the British Army and made up all or most of the Highland Regiments such as the Black Watch and the famed 42nd Highlanders comprised mainly of the Highland Stewarts, Camerons, MacIntoshes and MacLachlans. My Boyd line is as follows: 5th GGF - Robert Boyd 4th GGF - John Boyd 3rd GGF - Robert Boyd 2nd GGF - Robert Patterson Boyd 1st GGF - James Thomas Boyd GF- Thomas James Boyd According to material found in a book, "The Boyd Family" from Captain Robert Boyd through James Davis Boyd and others by Carl L. Oakes, Jr. "John Boyd, like his father, fought in the French and Indian War. He appears in existing military records of those days as a Private in the Company of Captain Joseph Armstrong, which was organized in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. According to Egle, in his 'Notes and Queries,' John participated in the Bouquet expedition of 1764." John Boyd was born between 1725 & 1730, Irvine, Scotland; died---will probated 25 Apr, 1770, Cumberland County, PA; buried: Rocky Springs Presbyterian Church, Cumberland County, PA, present day Franklin County. We visited the Rocky Springs Presbyterian Church in May and took pictures of the pew where my relations sat and also the pew of the minister, as well as that of Reverend John Craighead, who married a Jane Boyd. I have heard from several relations that John Boyd was a member of the Black Watch but I am not sure of that. What groups fought in the Bouquet Expedition? Thanks for your help.
My point was only that a colonial county might keep its "city" name when it was finally incorporated after the War. May I ask what county and state you are referring to as "James City County?" I thought that was in Virginia? I do appreciate it when complicated information is given so succinctly I can retain it. Thank you. Were there any records kept of membership in the Scottish Regiments ?(I remember my grandmother referring to them fondly as "the ladies from hell", a name apparently given by their enemies--or maybe the Brits.) My impression is that the Andrew Boyd of Frederick MD was not military at the time of his emigration. (1746-7.) Jan, Karen and et al, For some historical information the Scottish and English crowns were united in 1603 when James VI of Scotland also ascended to the British throne as Queen Elizabeth I's heir. So by the 1750's and 60's these mainly Scottish Regiments of HRH George III were in England's American Colonies. Yours Aye, David D. Boyd
They only help I offer is that my neighboring county is know as James City County. It's a colonial name and I think that was a custom--to make a county out of what had been a colonial city. Hi Everybody, I found an 1845 marriage record for Rachel Elizabeth Boyd and James Alexander Downing in the Family Data Collection of Ancestry.com last nite. They and several other Boyds were listed as being married in South, North Carolina. "South" is listed each time under the category of "City." However, I did see that all other names listed under "City" were actually county names. Can anyone help me out on this??? I have not been able to locate a town/city in NC - either extinct or current - with the name of "South". And I have not been able to locate any county name that includes "South". Maria

The British did - but the Scots didn't. Karen - I don't think you can receive an attachment on the list....but I can send you a short history of what happened. Let me know if you want me to send it privately? It's a short synopsis, about 4 pages. Hello To All Again, I just had a very welcome email from a VERY NICE person that gave me a truck load of information, even though we are not related (In the same Boyd tree)... Thank you. What was included was a name up the line that, up until this point I didn't know (James Boyd) m. Nellie, as recorded in the 1900 census. I know He is the correct James Boyd because of his children's names.. The record shows he was born in England, that's where I'm going to need some help.. The people here have been so very helpful, thanks. Hap Smith searching SMITH LINDERMAN BOYD BURRINGTON LOCKWOOD
