Anna - Some of the Boyds left Scotland because of the English crown. When the English crown tried to force the Scots to follow their leader and not our own there was a small problem. Mary, Queen of Scots, was beheaded and so a war ensued. I do believe that most of the Boyd lines came from the area of Ayr in Scotland and had lost our title when our ancestor followed Bonnie Prince Charlie instead of the English King. You can read up on it in most history books. By the way that person was obviously not a true Boyd. I am a U.S. Navy vet and there isn't much of anything that can make me blush. I should have said my dad was born 1912 so the late teens and 1920's were his years as a youth. ----- Original Message ----- From: <agfoster@headscheme.com> To: <CLANBOYD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 06, 2005 9:00 AM Subject: Re: [Boyd] Brits, Scots and Scots Irish > Harry: > Where did your name get the "e" on it? Thanks for asking!! Until my father came along our family name was Boyd. No E.! As a youngster my father was teased by his mother's family and some friends about belonging to a black family that lived near him also with the Boyd name. He was very displeased with the teasing and eventially added the E to our name. I forgot to mention his father died when he was 6 yrs. and mother died at 12. He was raised by grandparents and an uncle on his mothers side.I was born with the E and have never seen a need to change. As I am a world traveler by profession, I can tell you that England, Ireland and Scotland have plenty of Boyde's with E listed in their phone books. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rich" <richboyd@speednetllc.com> To: <CLANBOYD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 06, 2005 12:32 PM Subject: [Boyd] BOYDE > > > When I type the surname BOYDE in the search engine of my web site I get > 100+ hits. > Lots of Boyde's in early records in Canada and the U.S. > > When I type BOYD I get 1475 hits. > > When I type the BOID I get 60 hits. When I type the surname BOYDE in the search engine of my web site I get 100+ hits. Lots of Boyde's in early records in Canada and the U.S. When I type BOYD I get 1475 hits. When I type the BOID I get 60 hits. BOIDE gets only 4 hits. When I type BOYED I get 23 hits. Harry: Where did your name get the "e" on it? I haven't seen that except in medieval docs. My understanding/reading is that it comes from the Norman French for "beauty" or the Gaelic for "fair" Anna Grace On Jul 5, 2005, at 10:57 PM, Harry Boyde wrote:

Andrew Boyd appears in the 1790 and 1800 census for Frederick MD. Then not in 1810 census. However, An. Boyd and An.W. Boyd appear in the 1810 census in Monongalia Co. Va. A court document in Monongalia Co. Va says this Andrew died about 1815-1817. Do you have any indication if your Andrew moved on to Mon. Co. (W) Va. or possibly to Fayette Co. Pa. These counties are adjacent to the state lines and not that far from Frederick, MD. ----- Original Message ----- From: <agfoster@headscheme.com> To: <CLANBOYD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 05, 2005 10:41 AM Subject: Re: [Boyd] Brits, Scots and Scots Irish > Andrew Boyd married Mary McKay and David married Mary Meixsel. Rich, go to boyd clan international; click states; click Indiana; click family histories. There is a short biography on the Cornelius Boyd family history. My gr. grandfather was his brother James. For those with Frederick MD roots in the Boyd family: I ran across this list from Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick while sorting through some old files. Boyd Interments: John Jacob 1876 Frances A. 1903 Albert L. 1918 Mary Meixsel 1871 David 1862 Job H. 1842 Hamilton 1863 Elizabeth 1913 Nellie V. 1908 Caroline 1899 (daughter in law, married to Andrew 1877 Florence 1926 Annie 1855 Sophia M. 1922 David 1944 Charles W. 1917 Etta 1860
Andrew Boyd married Mary McKay and David married Mary Meixsel. Sometimes the McKay is listed as McKendree (as in Asbury McKendree) but I think this is merely a confusion. Mary McKay was the gr.daughter of William McKay who came to Scotland to Montgomery County MD in 1757. David was born 1790, died 1826. His wife Mary was the daughter of Jacob Meixsel of Holland, according to my records. I have a note (source long forgotten as it was from a time I didn't know much about research) "The tolerant government of the Province had attracted to the shores of the Chesapeake, English Cavaliers, Irish Catholics, and Scotch Presbyterians, who had unsuccessfully resisted Cromwell at Dunbar; Highlanders whom penal statutes had rendered nameless." Andrew appears on the rolls of the Committee of Observation in Fred. Co., Md about 1775. I think this was a local precursor to the Rev. War. Hey June- I saw your Boyd posting.... I have been doing some wandering on the computer and found a listing on the Family Data Collection (Marriages) for NC for James Boyd who married Margaret Lewis and Rachel Elizabeth Boyd who married James Alexander Downing. I realize that the ancestry.com Collection is just that --- a collection of info that has been entered by users. But do you have information on these possible NC marriages?? As you know - James Boyd was the brother of my Rachel Boyd Downing. And Rachel Elizabeth Boyd -James and Margaret Boyd's daughter - was married to my James Alexander Downing. Rachel Elizabeth Boyd and James Alexander Downing were first cousins. There were five a total of four different marriages listed as South, NC: Nancy Jane Boyd to Robert Wier/Weir 1812 Rachel Elizabeth Boyd to James Alexander Downing 1845 James Boyd to Margaret Lewis 1805 Malindah Boyd to William C. Queen 1840 I have been able to find evidence of the Wm. C. Queen family in Rutherford Co NC. Was this ever considered South County? I also know that the NC/SC lines changed ........... Was Rutherford ever considered a part of SC? Anyone???? Anyone???? Maria
I don't know much about Andrew's other children; my gr gr grandfather was David Boyd and his son Asbury McKendree (one of 14 kids) was my gr. grandfather who was an adult businessman during the War Between the States. It may take me a few days. I receive over 100 emails a day, and I only email at night for a couple of hours. You really should check out Google. I also learned a lot about Scots going to Ireland from: "Ireland under Elizabeth & James," Carisbrooke Library, London accounts by Edmund Spense, Sir John Davies and Fynes Moryson, who were in Ireland in ca. 1600. And I wish I could find the parents of my Thomas Boyd & Agnes Lammie, 1670, in Kilmarnock, Scotland. There were hundreds of Boyds who immigrated.
