    1. [CIVIL-WAR-WOMEN] Military research at the National Archives
    2. Kelley Bevis
    3. Hello. My name is Kelley -- I recently completed my Masters degree and am going to law school this fall here in Washington, D.C. School is expensive and I could use some extra money to pay for tuition and loans, so I am offering to do military research at the National Archives (service files, pension files, etc). Generally, a request for this kind of information takes the Archives several months, at a minimum, to process. I can retrieve them much faster and also give you someone to interact with instead of a government form. My fees are reasonable, intended to compensate me for my time, printing costs and postage for what I'll send back to you. The Archives offers extended hours once a month, so I would be doing research over the course of three days each month, and I am more than happy to send you a schedule. If you are interested, please just email me at texlabooks@gmail.com Take care. Kelley

    1. [CIVIL-WAR-WOMEN] Charles Shearer Keyser
    2. Eugene Stackhouse
    3. ADDENDUM: Charles Shearer Keyser (Newspaper article March 1924): CHARLES SHEARER KEYSER One of Germantown’s Sons Whose Influence for the Uplifting of His Fellows Still Survives The late Charles Shearer Keyser, the subject of our sketch, was born in Germantown June 18, 1825. He was the son of Joseph and Susan Shearer Keyser, and grandson of Jacob Souplis Keyser, who built the house in which he was born, No. 6027 Main street. It stands next above the original Keyser house, built by Dirck Keyser, who settled here in 1688. Charles S. Keyser received his early education in Germantown. In 1842 he entered the University of Pennsylvania, and was admitted to the bar in 1848. During the Civil War served as a private in the First City Troop, attached to the Second United States Cavalry, under Colonel George H. Thomas. He took an active interest in labor problems, and was at one time the Labor party’s candidate for District Attorney. Mr. Keyser was one of the original promoters of Fairmount Park, and his tracts did much to induce the city to purchase the private estates along the Schuylkill. In 1856 he published a paper on “Lemon Hill”. Of this pamphlet Ferdinand J. Dreer, the owner of Lemon Hill afterwards said: “Mr. Keyser called public attention to the importance them (the piece of ground now constituting Fairmaount Park), and which doubtless had a large influence in the result.” Mr. Keyser wrote extensively on social and political subjects. Among his works are “Fairmount Park,” Penn’s Treaty,” “Memoirs of Judge Sharswood,” Memoirs of William H. English,” “The Crime of 1873,” an omitted chapter in the recollections of John Sherman; “Independence Hall,” an account of the building of the hall and of its builder; “The Supreme Court Room,” “History of the Liberty Bell” (this article was used by City Councils in published pamphlets that were distributed throughout the country, when the Liberty Bell was taken on its different journeys); “Miden Armais,” “The Man of the New Race,” a plea for the colored people. In 1866 he married Sophronia MacKay Norris. They had one daughter, Suzanne Keyser Roth, who now lived in New York. Mr. Keyser was master of ceremonies of the celebration in the Centennial grounds July 5, 1875, and was author of the plan through which the statuary commemorative of the Revolution was erected in the Centennial grounds in 1876. He was also a member of the President’s Advisory Board of the United States Centennial Commission for the ceremonies in Independence Square on July 4, 1876. Mr. Keyser was on the board that had charge of the restoration of Independence Hall and was the one who opposed to the removal of the old court buildings. His opposition did not avail, and after the new buildings had been erected on the site, it was found that he was correct, and that the original buildings, although somewhat altered in appearance, had been removed to make a place for the two tinder boxes that had been placed there. They are occupied now as museums. A short time before his death he became actively interested in a plan to promote interest among school children in the history of the city. To this end he offered prizes for essays, and also conducted parties of boys through Independence Hall, explaining to them the various events connected with the historic building, a task for which no one was better fitted. Mr. Keyser died September 25, 1904. He was a member of the Historical, Netherland and German Societies and a member of other organizations. Civil War Museum & Library 4278 Griscom St. Philadelphia, PA 19124 215-204-5452 www.garmuslib.org<http://www.garmuslib.org/> New Year Series "The Forgotten Battle of Franklin Tennessee" You're invited on Sunday, January 6th, 2008 to be part of an exciting afternoon when the Grand Army of the Republic Museum and Library presents Dick Simpson's slide program "The Forgotten Civil War Battle of Franklin Tennessee". The program, which is free and open to the public, takes place at 1:30 p.m. at the museum, 4278 Griscom Street, Philadelphia. The battle of Franklin Tennessee began on November 30, 1864 when a 31,000 strong Confederate force under General John Bell Hood cornered the 26,000 man Federal Army of General John Schofield at Franklin. Late that afternoon, 100 regiments of the South's best soldiers, numbering 20,000 men, began a spectacular assault along a two-mile front. What occurred in the next five hours was one of the great tragedies of the American Civil War. There were more Confederate soldiers advancing that day than in Pickett's charge at Gettysburg and there were more Confederate losses than at almost every one-day battle of the Civil War. Before it was over a record six Confederate generals would lose their lives. Yet there is no National Cemetery and no National Battlefield Park at Franklin. Instead, almost all of the 1864 trench line of that battle has become suburban neighborhoods and small businesses. A raffle of Civil War books will be held to help raise money to preserve newly acquired pieces of the battlefield. Slides of what Franklin looks like today will be part of this program. 1. [CIVIL-WAR-WOMEN] Charles Gentry, Alfred Kephart
    2. Eugene Stackhouse
    3. The Germantown Independent Gazette, Friday, January 27, 1905 TWO VETERANS PASS AWAY. A Survivor of the War Tells a Plain Story of Fallen Comrades. Written for The Independent-Gazette. The grim reaper has again visited Ellis Post, No. 6, G. A. R., and gleaned an abundant harvest, eleven of the country's defenders having fallen since the last Memorial Day. During the week two have been added to the death roll, Charles D. Gentry, of the 114th Pa. Vols. Zouaves), and Alfred Kephart, of the 108th Pa. Vols. Many of the homes have been in mourning, and many vacant chairs tell of loved ones called away. Of the two last comrades to be carried to their graves, much could be written. Who among us forgets the widowed mother of Comrade Kephart? No mother made a greater sacrifice than did this old Germantown heroine. Bereft of her husband, she gave her whole family, which consisted of five gallant boys, to defend the country she loved so well. Soon two of her boys fall and are laid away. One is battling at the front, one suffering agony in the Andersonville Prison. Our departed comrade, Alfred, was her baby boy—all that remained with her, and he, too, was offered for the country's cause. Sarah Kephart has passed from earth to her reward, and only yesterday her son Alfred was laid away by loving comrades at our National Cemetery. Only two of this good old family survive. The life of our departed comrade, Charles D. Gentry, of the 114th Pa. Vols., needs no eulogy—it is an open book. He was one of those noble, patriotic souls who was willing to give up everything for his country. The writer, on his annual visits to old historic Gettysburg, never fails to visit the Sherfy farm and place some little emblems where more than 150 gallant Zouaves were among the dead and wounded. There stands a portion of the famous old cherry tree, with a cannon ball imbedded in its trunk, as a monument to these gallant men who fought and fell. It was right here that Comrade Gentry was laid low and carried to the rear. He recovered and lived a long and useful life. It was here on the Sherfy farm that a number of our brave boys from old Germantown shed their blood, among them being Comrades John R. Waterhouse and H. S. Strouse. Both, after living useful lives, have passed away. The gallant Captain Frank Elliott, still fresh in our memories, was less fortunate—his remains repose in an unknown grave where he fell at Chancellorsville. Collis, gallant Collis, the first commander, has gone down, too. His remains repose in the pretty National Cemetery at Gettysburg, in a spot selected by himself. Brave and loyal Zouaves—few remain to tell the story of the deeds of heroism during the bloody contest of '61-'65. To-day we take the last look at our old Zouave comrade, C. D. Gentry, and consign his body to its final resting place in pretty Ivy Hill Cemetery, where scores of little Post 6 flags float over the silent mounds where comrades rest.
