    3. That is valuable genealogical information that you have, could you please send me a copy of the scan? Please send the scan to my email address, the list will not accept attachments. This is great news thanks so much for sharing with the list? The state of MO did this type of documentation asking the new resident things like the name of their slave owner. In 1898-1903 persons registering to the Dawes roll were asked the names of their slave owner. Why not the military? thanks Betteye On Mon, Jun 18, 2012 at 1:05 AM, freedbyluvv <freedbyluvv@yahoo.com> wrote: > Greetings list. I hope someone here can help me. I hope someone here can help me. I've attempted to research this, but I cannot find a clear answer.? I have an ancestor who was signed up for the draft in 1863. In his registration, a column openly asks "by whom is he owned" and the slaveowner's name is provided. I looked at the 1860 slave schedule in the same county as his registration, and I see a male fitting my ancestor's description. ? My question is, was it common for an enslaved man to join the war and openly say to whom he belonged? I recall learning about many enslaved men running away from plantations to join, but am wondering about this situation. Would a slaveowner willingly send one to join the war? Knowing the Confederates could lose and ultimately end slavery? If my ancestor was indeed a runaway, I'd think he'd join in an adjacent county? As a matter of fact, the entire page listed all Black men, and each one named their "owners". ?Does anyone know how this came to be? Thanks in advance, April. ------------------------------

    3. It is my understanding that during the Civil War the Union did some recruiting among recently-arrived immigrants and that there were some segregated regiments of the same ethnicity, with many of the volunteers not being American citizens. Can someone answer the following related questions for me? 1) Were there regiments comprised of Dutch volunteers and, if so, which ones? 2) Were recruitment officers sent to Europe to find volunteers to fight for the Union? 3) Was American citizenship a reward for serving in the Union forces? 4) How much were immigrant recruits paid? Thank you in advance for any assistance you are able to give. J. Geybels

    3.   Greetings list, I am writing to ask if anyone here knows what the term "bounty due", means on a Civil War muster-out roll card? My ancestor has a muster out roll card, and on it is a section:    Due U.S. for arms, equipment, ect $.......... (his is blank) Bounty paid $..........(his is blank)      Due $...........100.00   Remarks:   "Stop for 1 Springfield musket retained."       So, does anyone know what "Bounty due" means?  I cannot find the answer on the Internet searches for that phrase.   Thank you in advance for any and all input.   April.
