At least a few Irishmen were involved. 59 were successful in reaching Union lines, 48 were recaptured, 2 drowned. A list of 104 of the escapees is at: http://www.mdgorman.com/story_of_the_famous_tunnel_escap.htm More stuff - mostly newspaper articles at the time - is at: http://www.mdgorman.com/libby_prison_breakout.htm BTW, check out Mike Gorman's Civil War Richmond home page - http://www.mdgorman.com/ It's a gold mine with maps, photos, info on hospitals, prisons and other sites...IMO definitely one of the best ACW sites on the web.
