To the list: I am conducting a major research project on Irish commissioned officers in the United States Army. I have been gathering information for this project for several years and have been very successful in gathering documents (like pension files and ACP files) that reveal the military lives of these officers. My focus is on commissioned officers that served between 1865 and 1898. There were just over 200 Irish officers in this group and almost all were veterans of the Civil War. I am anxious to collect additional information of a cultural or biographical nature to balance my manuscript and hope that some of you might share data beneficial to this project. For the next two weeks I will post the names of these officers along with their birthplace (town or county) in Ireland, if I know it, along with some data that regards their service in the U.S. Army. I thank everyone in advance for their patience while I solicit this information and hope that these messages will not burden or otherwise abuse the purpose of this list.
