First you're going to need to find out what regiment he served with. Once you do that, you'll then be ready to get his service record & perhaps a pension record, and start tracking his footsteps. You can rent microfilm and microfiche through your local (hopefully) Family History Center (these are located at some LDS (Mormon) churches).
