    1. [CIVIL-WAR-IRISH] emmigrants from Co. Cavan who fought
    2. Kevin O'Malley
    3. Hellow all, I'm a new member to this group and enjoyed reading the postings thus far. I'm very interested in irish history and customs of the 19th century, mainly because I've traced my mother's family to the late 1800's. The surnames include Boyle, Bannon, Denning, Jackson, and White. The area where they come from is Cootehill, Co. Cavan, so I am interested in this area the most. I also do civil war reenacting and I portray an irish emmigrant soldier of the 19th century - so more knowledge of Ireland of that time helps here as well. Besides Sheridan and O'Rorke, does any one know of any soldiers - private, officers, union or confederate, who came from Co. Cavan and its vicinity in Ireland? I appretiate any help on this. Regards, Kevin O'Malley Long Island, NY __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Messenger - Talk while you surf! It's FREE. http://im.yahoo.com/

    2. Desoto Joe
    3. Came in from work tonight & my wife did a wonderful thing. She taped an episode of the Nova science series, on channel 9 (PBS) for me. It was titled "Lincoln's Secret Weapon" A report about the Monitor & the Navy raising the screw section of the craft. Check your local listings on the PBS station in your area & try to catch this, it was worth watching. Mine usually shows the episode a few times throughout the week at different time frames. 1. [CIVIL-WAR-IRISH] Re: Irish Officers 2nd list
    2. Kevin Stanton
    3. Second Installment: Thomas Byrne to John Carland To the list: I am conducting a major research project on Irish commissioned officers in the United States Army. I have been gathering information for this project for several years and have been very successful in gathering documents (like pension files and ACP files) that reveal the military lives of these officers. My focus is on commissioned officers that served between 1865 and 1898. There were just over 200 Irish officers in this group and almost all were veterans of the Civil War. I am anxious to collect additional information of a cultural or biographical nature to balance my manuscript and hope that some of you might share data beneficial to this project. For the next two weeks I will post the names of these officers along with their birthplace (town or county) in Ireland, if I know it, along with some data that regards their service in the U.S. Army. I thank everyone in advance for their patience while I solicit this information and hope that these messages will not burden or otherwise abuse the purpose of this list. 2. Kevin Frye
    3. I would like to welcome those of you new to this site and tell you there are some really great folks who are willing to help just for the asking. I, myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in Andersonville Georgia. Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am willing to do what I can. My sources are the following....... There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list which has the names and grave numbers of some 13000 graves with only 460 marked as " UNKNOWN " This along with a CD I have which contains 34,000 names of the 45,000 who were imprisoned there which helps me find prisoner records because of misspellings of the names or alternate names. I visit the prison site every couple of weeks and have access to the onsite databases as well as the physical files. I would like to let you know of another service I offer which is to take photos of graves for a small fee. .I also wish to thank the patience of those regular subscribers for my frequent postings. If there is anything I can do in helping your research at Andersonville, please just ask. Please see my website which is dedicated to those who passed through the gates of Andersonville Kevin Please visit my homepage at http://www.angelfire.com/ga2/Andersonvilleprison/index.html

    3. One note on the records at NARA. If he served in two different units, NARA would have two different service records which would need to be ordered separately. They did not start compiling service records for officers in the regular army until 1863. If he or a survivor applied for a pension, there should be a single pension file at NARA. -----Original Message----- From: Dennis J. This regiment was part of Gen. Patterson's Army in the Shenandoah. Its short service included moving from Harrisburg to Chambersburg PA on 23 Apr 1861 with duty there til 8 Jun, then at Camp Williams 8-14 Jun; advance to Williamsport 14-16 Jun, skirmish with cavalry 23 Jun, occupation of Martinsburg 3 Jul, advance on Bunker Hill 15 Jul, at Keyes Ford 20 Jul, then back to Harrisburg and muster out. (Dyer's Compendium) Took some work but found him in the 7th PA Cav, this time as Scanlin. He joined on 4 Aug 1862 - one source says as 1st Lt, another as Capt, of Company M - and was discharged (resigned?) on 8 Apr 1863. The 7th Cav was already in the field - mustered in Dec 1861 - as part of Gen. Buell's Army of the Ohio. During S's stay with the regiment, Co. M was involved in scouting west and middle TN. Reunited with the rest of the regiment in Nov '62 at Nashville, it took part in the advance on Murfreesboro late Dec '62 and the Battle of Stone's River. The complete Dyer entry can be found by going thru: http://carlisle-www.army.mil/usamhi/DL/chron.htm#ACivilWar18611865 (You'll need the Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this.) It's possible this is one and the same person - the records <are> next to each other in the record group at NARA. Bit tougher finding out the Regular Army connection as these records aren't on line, but they are on microfilm. Dennis mailto:fran@ees.eesc.com

    3. Ida Here is the HDS data on your man. Note how the name is spelled if you send to the NARA for his records: Bartholomew Scanlon Residence not listed; Enlisted on 4/22/1861 as a Sergeant. On 4/22/1861 he mustered into "F" Co. PA 7th Infantry He was Mustered Out on 7/29/1861 at Harrisburg, PA Sources: History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-1865 I have searched the information I have on the Seveth PA and do not find his name. Perhaps sending for his records to the NARA will give the reason for his muster out so close after mustering in. He may have been transferred to a Regular Army assignment. On the other hand you may want to check this Confederate soldier out although it is highly unlikely they are the same because in 1860 there was a Bartholomew Scanlon living in Virginia and it is doubtful it is the same one: Bartholomew Scanlon Enlist Date Enlist Place Enlist Rank Enlist Age 22 June 1861 Priv Served Virginia Enlisted I Co. 33rd Inf Reg. VA Deserted on 01 November 1862 Source: The Virginia Regimental Histories Series Abbreviation: VA Roster C

Would you be able to tell me how I could find out > about him - ----------------------------------- Margaret, Do you have a full name for him? You might get some help right here. First you're going to need to find out what regiment he served with. Once you do that, you'll then be ready to get his service record & perhaps a pension record, and start tracking his footsteps. In addition to what Joe sent: Resources at the Family History Library: http://www1.familysearch.org/sg/Tenness.html If you scroll down to Military Records and then Civil War, you'll see what resources are at the Family History Library. You can rent microfilm and microfiche through your local (hopefully) Family History Center (these are located at some LDS (Mormon) churches).
