The East Tennessee Historical Society is unveiling a new family heritage program, Civil War Families of Tennessee. Civil War Families of Tennessee (CWFT) seeks to identify and honor the sacrifices of the valiant soldiers on both sides of the conflict. This lineage program will link current descendants with their Civil War ancestors, encourage new research, and combine the experiences of thousands of individuals and families to tell more fully the story of the Civil War in Tennessee. If you are a direct or collateral descendant of any individual who served in Tennessee during the Civil War-Union or Confederate-you are eligible for membership in CWFT. Service may have been in either a Tennessee unit or any non-Tennessee unit which was active in the state. Membership is also open through an ancestor who served elsewhere but lived in Tennessee either before, during, or after the war. In order to recognize the service of the many young men who died unwed and without children, CWFT offers membership through collateral descent also. Like its sister program, First Families of Tennessee, CWFT applications and membership files will be housed in the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection (Knoxville, Tennessee) of the Knox County Public Library System where together the two projects will provide an unparalleled resource for family and historical research in the Volunteer State. CWFT members will receive a handsome certificate with the names of the applicant and the ancestor, along with the name of the ancestor's company and regiment. A roster of the members and their ancestors will eventually be published in book form. CWFT members will also be recognized at a grand reunion to be hosted by the East Tennessee Historical Society. For additional information about the Civil War Families of Tennessee project, including a downloadable application form, please visit the ETHS web site at www.east-tennessee-history.org. Anyone unable to download a form may request an application form by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to: Civil War Families of Tennessee c/o ETHS PO Box 1629 Knoxville, TN 37901-1629 Additional questions about the new CWFT project may also be addressed to civilwar@east-tennessee-history.org (Please note that ETHS does not provide email-based research assistance at this time.) The East Tennessee Historical Society, founded in 1834, is one of the oldest cultural institutions in the state of Tennessee. ETHS, a non-profit organization headquartered in Knoxville, is dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and promoting the history of East Tennessee. The society's programs and activities are made possible through the support of its membership. The society's First Families of Tennessee family heritage program was founded in 1992 and now includes more than 13,000 members in 50 states and eight foreign nations.

Denis a chara, The Know Nothings are mentioned in your answer re the 9th Massachussets Volunteer Infantry. Who were the Know Nothings? What was their gripe with the Irish and what became of them?? Is mise le meas Eamonn -----Original Message----- From: Dennis J. Samito. Originally recruited and organized as the 13th Massachusetts Volunteer Militia in April-May 1861, the regiment was designated the 9th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry upon mustering into Federal service in June. Its nucleus were members of the Columbian Artillery, a pre-war militia company composed mainly of Irishmen. When the Know Nothings took control of the State government, all "foreigner" militia companies were ordered to be disbanded in 1855. In response, its commander, Thomas Cass, kept the company going by reforming it into a social organization - the Columbian Association. When the war broke out, its members began raising an Irish-American regiment. Six companies were raised in Boston (Co A - Columbian Guards; B - Otis Guards; C - Douglas Guards; D - Meagher Guards; E - Cass Light Guard; I - McClellan Rifles), and one each in Salem (Co F - Fitzgerald Guards), Marlboro (Co G - Wolfe Tone Guards), Milford (Co H - Davis Guards) and Stoughton (Co K - Stoughton Guards). Cass was commissioned colonel. Upon mustering in, the change from a militia regiment to a volunteer one meant the elimination of some officer positions. Cass also took the opportunity to replace some officers with those he felt were better qualified. This caused a bit of dissatisfaction; while the majority of the enlisted men quickly recovered, it remained a sore point with many of the officers, and various cliques developed. On 26 June the regiment departed for the front. Held at Washington, the 9th did not take part in the First Battle of Bull Run. For the rest of its 3 years service, however, it took part in all the campaigns of the Army of the Potomac and saw action in many of its battles, from the Peninsular in Spring of 1862 to when it was pulled out of the lines at Cold Harbor on 10 June 1864. Along the way, 15 officers and 194 enlisted men were killed or mortally wounded; 99 others died of disease (source: Dyer's Compendium). At Malvern Hill on 1 Jul 1862, Col. Cass was seriously wounded and died 12 days later. Patrick R. Guiney took command; at the Wilderness on 5 May 1864, he was shot in the face and lost an eye. Patrick T. Hanley commanded the regiment until it mustered out at Boston on 21 June 1864. Those who had re-enlisted and added recruits were transferred to the 32nd MA. The author's brother Michael also wrote a history - "The Irish Ninth in Bivouac and Battle" - in 1867, prior to the availability of most records. Daniel's goal was to correct this shortcoming of Michael's book and provide a more scholarly, complete history. Another goal was to counter attacks by anti-Irish/Catholic bigots, who were still as rabid as ever. The book doesn't restrict itself to just telling the story of the 9th, but also places it in the larger scheme of things. So those researching someone in the 9th but may not be familiar with CW history will get a lot of background. Anecdotes are scattered throughout the text, keeping the book lively and fun to read. Chapters begin with a few lines of poetry, including some by Guiney's daughter Louisa. Appendices include a complete roster, including unassigned recruits, with individual service summaries. Here's the second: "Commanding Boston's Irish Ninth: The Civil War Letters of Colonel Patrick R. Guiney, Ninth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry", edited by Christian G. Samito, Fordham University, 1998. Born on 15 Jan 1835 in Parkstown, Co Tipperary, Patrick Guiney emigrated with his father when he was 7. His mother and younger brother joined them, in Portland, Maine, about a year later. Guiney became a lawyer, relocated to Boston, and married Jeannette Margaret Doyle on 8 Jan 1859. The newly-weds set up in Roxbury. The couple's first born died in infancy; a daughter, Louisa, born 7 Jan 1861, was their only other child. Originally, Guiney was 1st Lieutenant of Company I. When the regiment was mustered into Federal service, Col. Cass had him promoted to Captain and command of Co. D. Guiney was promoted to Major in Oct 1861 and to Lieutenant Colonel in Jan 1862. After Cass was wounded at Malvern Hill that July, Guiney became commander of the regiment and promoted to Colonel on 26 Jul 1862. Unfortunately, not everything was hunky-dory in the 9th - a lot of political intrigue went on. Guiney was an out-spoken supporter of the Lincoln administration and its policies, including emancipation. This never sat well with some of the company grade officers, who were dyed-in-the-wool Democrats and formed a cabal to have him removed. Political leaders at home attempted to use the 9th as a vehicle to advance their favorites as well. Despite all the back-biting, jealousy and other grief, Guiney stuck it out and remained in command. With little more than a month to go before mustering out, on 5 May 1864 during the Battle of the Wilderness, Guiney was shot in the face, a wound that cost him his left eye and left him badly disfigured. Jennie met him in a Washington hospital and brought him home to Roxbury. Although still recuperating, Guiney met his men at their homecoming on 15 June. Postwar, despite continuing ill health caused by his wound, Guiney remained active, serving in government positions, retaining his colonelcy of the 9th (now in the State Militia), continuing his private practice, and involved in veteran, Irish and Catholic affairs. He also remained a maverick, campaigning for Grant's 1868 presidential race. Guiney died 21 Mar 1877. Jennie lived to 1910, cared for by daughter Louisa, who never married, becoming instead an accomplished poet and remaining devoted to her dad's memory. The great majority of the letters are addressed to Jennie and were written from 4 Jun 1861, while the regiment was still in MA, to 2 Jun 1864, after Guiney had arrived home in Roxbury. Included in the collection is the letter sent by the cabal to Governor Andrew, trying to get rid of Guiney, and letters by others in rebuttal. Samito does an excellent job putting the letters into context, providing notes saying what's going on at the time the letters are being written, and providing biographical information. Citations and biblio are included. Dennis

A Dhonnochaidh, a chara, Thanks for all the interest to you and all the participants. Well it really does seem as if it may not have been Irish v. Irish after all. Could Burns and Co. really have made their statement without authenticating it's truth - such a great series in so many ways. I love the tangents that some of the contributors have diverted on re Michael Sullivan. I have read somewhere that Col. Robert Mc Millan was from Co. Tyrone but have not been able to track down much else on him. Its a bit tricky being here based in Perth, Western Australia. I know it was the Georgian 24th > Regiment behind the wall. > > Why does Burns and co. say these Georgians were Irish. ---------------------- It's an oft-repeated and accepted story, but I wonder if anyone ever checked it out. It might be more folklore than fact. Question is, how Irish was the 24th? The regiment was commanded by Robert McMillan, an Antrim* man. 3 sons were also in the regiment, and Company K - the McMillan Guards - is ID'd by Kelly J. O'Grady as having a "green tint", although "not wholly Irish". He doesn't go into any specifics, and mentions only two other Irish members. While there certainly were Irishmen in the 24th, calling it an Irish regiment is a different matter. Looking at the roster at the 24th web site, not that many surnames leap out as being definitely Irish, but that doesn't mean much; there's a lot of Irish running around with monikers that originated elsewhere. Without checking the roster against, say, the 1860 census, it's hard to say whether the story's an exaggeration. It might be the story got its start in an article published by the Charleston Daily Courier entitled "A Gallant Irishman at Fredericksburg": "Meagher met his match at Fredericksburg in a gallant son of the Emerald Isle, Colonel Robert McMillan, of the Twenty-fourth Georgia. We should like to see McMillan at the head of the lamented Cobb's brigade, pitted against Meagher or Corcoran in an open field..." Once a commander's ethnicity is publicized, it doesn't take much for the public to extend it to the entire unit. Facts from "Clear the Confederate Way" by Kelly J. O'Grady, Savas Publishing, 2000; opinions are just my own. * Not sure about this; in the text, O'Grady says McMillan was born in Antrim, but in the preface he says Tyrone. Found out that the 63rd GA was just being organized at Savannah in Dec 1862, mainly from men assigned to coastal batteries, so, nope, not the Sullivan in the story. It was at Wagner in Jul 1863, was supposed to transfer to the Army of Northern Virginia, but got rerouted to the Army of Tennessee instead. Thought the Sullivan in the 11th GA might be someone to look at, as the 11th GA Regiment was assigned to Hood's Division at Fredericksburg, but it turns out he was in the 11th <Battalion>, which was consolidated into the 47th GA and assigned to the Army of Tennessee. I have to say that joining this list (a strange thing for someone way down under in OZ to actually do) has been fascinating. I am learning more and more about the Civil War and look forward to many more interesting discussions. If I eventually find my Patrick Flynn and where he enlisted (I have now been able to confirm that he fought for the North) it will be a bonus but in the meantime the learning experience is a most enjoyable one.
