A chairde Fenian and republican prisoners have always managed to mount spectacular escapes. Does anybody know if this tradition was demostrated by the Irish on either side during the civil war. Were there any large break outs made during the civil war and were the Irish involved in any?? Is mise le meas Eamonn McNulty.

General Morgan Escapes a Union jail 1863 On July 31 Morgan was sentenced, with 69 others officers to the Ohio State Penitentiary at Columbus. No sooner had the cellblock door slammed behind them than they began plotting their escape. It took 23 days to tunnel their way out of jail. The complete text I found in The People's Almanac #2 pages 1295 & 1296 Ann ----- Original Message ----- From: "McNulty, Eamonn" <Eamonn.McNulty@health.wa.gov.au> To: <CIVIL-WAR-IRISH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 20, 2001 1:10 AM Subject: [Civil-War-Irish] Escapes > A chairde > > Fenian and republican prisoners have always managed to mount spectacular > escapes. > > Does anybody know if this tradition was demostrated by the Irish on either > side during the civil war. > > Were there any large break outs made during the civil war and were the Irish > involved in any?? > > Is mise le meas > > Eamonn McNulty. > > > ==== CIVIL-WAR-IRISH Mailing List ==== > "Faugh a Ballaugh!" Could I please ask you to add an English translation to the Gaelic used .. It is so frustrating not knowning what is being said. I have a Irish-English Dictionary but often times I cannot find the right meaning as to what is written. The inn that they ran in Carrickfergus still stands. Its on the approach to Belfast. Just offshore a bit John Paul Jones gave the Royal Navy a bloody nose
A chairde, Summing up the combined wisdom of the Irish Civil War Group regarding the ethnicity of Grant and Brady we find that: US Grant considered himself thoroughly American, though we know his great grandfather was John Simpson, born at Dergina Co. Tyrone in 1738. Matthew Brady said he was American too, though one source claims him as an Eireannach (Irishman). We appear to have nothing tangible on his parents but with a name like Brady (O' Bradaigh) his paternal ancestry can't be anything but Irish. Personally I'm a bit dissappointed that we don't have more on this fascinating character, who was responsible for the recording of such a rich pictorial archive at immense personal expense. Is mo/r a truaigh (It's agreat shame). Many thanks to all who took part, Is mise le meas, E/amonn Mac an Ultaigh.

Hi Eamonn, Please include translation when using "The Irish", thanks. This BRADY and GRANT thing has been bouncing around for quite a while now but I agree with you. John WAYNE alias Marion MORRISON also disavowed the hyphen and wanted to be known as an American. Will forward other "Fighting 69th" missives that look interesting. How is the weather "down under"? Today is scorching here, it is supposed to go to 98 or so. Have you heard of an Australian beer called XXXX (Four X)? Slan go foill! Bill, Thanks for the tip. However, some web-based mail handlers will print gibberish and different of the TrueType fonts will use different numbers for the ALT + # fadas. Also, though, you can hang the Microsoft "Character Map" program in your StartUp folder and have the correct ones available regardless of the font being used. Have generally found that very effective with non-list emails. Hello List, To jump to a second (or third inning) on American Presidents, I've not seen Andrew Jackson listed as Irish. However, if faulty memory serves, he was the first American President to have a direct link to Ireland. Father (or parents both; at least grandfather) was born in Ireland. Can anyone confirm or deny? Also, to pause for reflection on Eamonn's point. IMHO, Ken Burn's "The Civil War" series is the finest history of the war yet presented in a visual medium. Eight hours of the best time I ever spent had with my eyes open! But where would Ken Burns have been without Matthew Brady? Bob: Do not take the word "Deserted" to be of any significance. It was common if someone was being treated for wounds, whatever, for them to call them deserted should they not appear at stand-up. They said the same about my great grandfathers, in fact I proved that they were in the hospital at Gettysburg being treated. They had been taken prisoner as well many different times when they were classified as "deserted". Don't believe all that you read. Remember Lincoln's quote.l Joan Keller
