    3. A chairde, The reason I started this thread was to let folks know - who did not know already - that there was a great variety of battle flags carried by Southern troops. Along the way, I had to do some more research and learn a bit myself, i.e., that the 1st National wasn't immediately discarded in favor of Beauregard's and Johnston's flag. But outside of that, all I can say is things sure went downhill in a hurry over the weekend. Anyway, this slamming stuff and flame war is over. Beannacht Dia, Dennis J. Francis Listowner

    3. I have to agree with Ronnie - for the most part anyway, since I'm a "Yankee." But, that aside, this discussion has become really absurd within the context of racism, vice historical research (which I thought was the purpose of the group). The flag in question, to me represents the honour of the men who died for it. The same as the Irish Brigade, and the various other regimental flags of the 69th represent honour. Or, any regimental flag north or south, for that matter... They were brave men on both sides, fighting to preserve ideals and cultures, unique to separate regional ways of life. For the south, the issue of slavery was overshadowed by issue of states rights. I have always thought General George Pickett described the secession of southern states best. I am unable to quote him exactly, but to paraphrase; "My analogy of the secession from the union is this. It's like a private club. Certain members of the club, over a period of time usurp power, and try to impose their will upon the other members, contrary to the charter of the club. Certainly, in such circumstances, an individual has the right to resign from the club. That's what I did, I resigned!!!" I invite your attention to the following website, and highly recommend reading the documents on these pages. Perhaps you will learn something about the history of OUR government, and better understand the issues of the day, i.e.; American Civil War. http://members.home.com/civilwarcsa/page7.htm In the mean time, I ask that you refrain from comments disruptive to the group as a whole... Perhaps, if you do, it will keep others from unsubsribing from the list. It seems to me, that General Pickett's thoughts of 139 years ago may accurately represent those of many of us on the list today. By that I mean; unsubscribe vice resign! O'Trehy
