    3. Only found 2 Lawrence Daltons. One served with the 69th New York State Militia for 3 months in 1862. His wife - who filed for a pension - was named Mary and she was still in NY, so count him out. The other enlisted in Co C, 90th New York Infantry on 24 Nov 1861 at NYC and was discharged at Savannah GA on 2 Jan 1865. Trouble is, there's no collaborating evidence beside name and I was unable to locate him in pension index. Also didn't find him on the 1890 Veterans Schedule. Found a Laurence of the right age on the 1860 census living in NYC, but he was born in NY. He first appears in the St Louis directory in 1866 edition working for the gas works. Dennis -----Original Message----- I have been lookig at some civil war daltons listed as Laurence or Lawrence. I am seeking any clarifying information as to whether anyone is aware of a Laurence born circa 1844, native of Ireland, and naturalized in St Louis after the war.

    3. Marie For understanding the battle here are some things [which you may already know]: Summary: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Vicksburg Two very good books I have read: Shelby Foote: Civil War - a narrative Vol II Bruce Catton: Never Call Retreat [Vol 3 of series] Specific searches: Search on line the OR [Official Records] for J. C. Lewis or any keyword that you have that might pin down the action such as the units in his command. http://digital.library.cornell.edu/m/moawar/waro.html Confederate Military History seachable: http://archive.org/details/confederatemilit72evan In the Union there were 1600 soldiers whose name was J...... Lewis In the Confederate States there weren 1000 of that name so it would be helpful to know his full name, origin, state served, age etc. There was a Captain J. C. Lewis in the Alabama Silver Run Guards. http://www.history-sites.com/cgi-bin/bbs62x/alcwmb/arch_config.pl?md=read;id=31592 Mike > I am wondering where I might find information on the Battle od Vicksberg, I am looking for Captain JC Lewis who fought in this battle and lost his arm in this battle. > Marie

    1. Re: [CIVIL-WAR-IRISH] Confederate army
    2. Marie, It would really help to know what State Captain Lewis was from as well as his Branch. The National Park Service list of Confederate soldiers lists 14 Captains with the name of J. C. Lewis in various Branches. Any good history of Vicksburg would list the Confederate units present both in the city and in the defenses to the east. 2. Marie, Do you know what unit Captain Lewis was in? Or what sort. Infantry or artillery or Engineer? That would be a big help. 3. Marie writes: < I am looking for information on a John McGlin who served in the civil war who lost a leg and when well enough returned to Co Donegal in a town named Tully abt 1867. There's 1 John McGlin listed in the Soldiers and Sailors System (CWSS) who was a private in Company F, 102nd New York Infantry. Appears he was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps. Using McGlynn gets 14 hits on Union side (one of which is probably the McGlin above), 2 Confederate. Using McGlinn gets 16 hits Union, 2 Confederate. These are all army; no sailors were found. CWSS doesn't give much to go on, but if you know what state he was living in, it will narrow the field. If he was Union and lost a leg, there's a very high probability he collected an invalid pension early on. Ancestry has the index cards for these, but FamilySearch has them for free if you're not subscribed to Ancestry. Dennis
