I assume it is Confederate because my father's Cook ancestors from GA fought for the Confederacy and my great grandmother Perrigo's family I assume would have done the same. If you google on Orphan Brigade you will get a nice web site for the unit. Kentucky was one of those states that was thought would leave the union. Many men from the state joined the Confederacy. When Kentucky didn't leave, those men could not return home - thus they were "orphans". There is another story of how they got that name - but the web site will fill you in on the rest. I really don't know much more than this. I have read several articles about the unit and that is how I am familiar with them. Paula
