Bailey "The Bloodiest Day", Alexandria, VA: Time-Life Books, 1984. If you're just starting to read about the battle, this gives a good overview to use as a starting point. For the actions of both armies leading up to the battle: John Michael Priest. "Before Antietam: The Battle for South Mountain", New York: Oxford University Press, 1992.
