Brenda, What a great trip you have planned! Have you looked at the Smithsonian's Great Battles and Battlefields of the Civil War? I like it because it is divided by place not by chronology. And then I think that you could use the materials found in the visitors centers that are maintained by the park service for filling in more information on each site. My one piece of advice is to have some of your rooms in place before you go. My husband and I traveled in Virginia in October last year or the year before and we had to drive more than a 100 miles to find a room one night. I had a cell phone and kept calling ahead and asking the totally booked motel what to call to reach the next exit.
