Version 7.5 of the U.S. Civil War Units File (Sept. 29, 2003) is available on the web, and we hope that it will soon be available from the Rootsweb server. (See below for addresses.) The Civil War Units File (CWUNITS) lists people who have information on a unit or ship (often rosters, battles, etc.) and are willing to help others research it. Some are experts; most are "just" helpful fellow researchers. If you see a listing for a unit you are interested in, you can send the contact person email and share information. There are also listings for battles, organizations, counties, ethnic groups, etc. The following addresses no longer work and we were unable to find the people, so their listings have been deleted. To get a listing of all of the ROOTS-L files, send the command get roots-l.catalog Another way to obtain files is via anonymous ftp. To do this, ftp to ftp.rootsweb.com using "anonymous" (withOUT quotes!) as your username and your net address as your password. Issue the command: cd /pub/roots-l/genealog/ You may issue a dir command to see a listing of files, use ctrl-s to temporarily halt the dir command, and ctrl-q to resume the dir command. The command for retrieving a file via ftp is: get genealog.filename substituting, of course, the proper filename for "filename" above. Notice the PERIOD between "genealog" and the filename. Then issue a quit command to exit. If you have a file you would like included in the GENEALOG area, please send email to the Genealog administrator, Vicki Lindsay Thauvin, at chance@eskimo.com describing the file.
