Brenda: The 16th NC Infantry was part of Scales Brigade, Pender's Division & A. P. Hill's Corps. Stephen Sears writes the following in his book "Gettysburg" re: the 16th's participation in "Pickett's Charge." "William Lowrance, commanding Alfred Scales' decimated Brigade (16th, 22nd, 34th, 13th & 38th North Carolina), was posted on the right in this second line behind Pettigrew." Trudeau in his "Gettysburg: A Testing of Courage" also writes of Scales' Brigade: "It appears that the majority of Scales' Brigade, commanded here by Colonel W. Lee Lowrance, never crossed the Emmittsburg Road but instead took position along it to fire at the enemy on the hill." On the first day of Battle at Gettysburg the 16th NC was engaged in & around the McPherson's Ridge area. I hope you find this information useful. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com
