    1. [CIVIL-WAR] Lost grave found
    2. Robert L. Shumate
    3. Several weeks ago I asked if anyone knew where my g-g grandfather might be buried. I traveled from California to Virginia for a class reunion and took the time to go to Hopewell, VA to look at the City Point National Cemetery. There he was! Actually I firmly believe it is him. The name is spelled wrong but when I went to the office and talked with the director he agreed with me. My relative's name was Shumate, J. The grave is Shoemaker, J. It does not have a Confederate marker but also states his unit is unknown. Unless some one can do a search and find a Union or Confederate Pvt. with the name Shoemaker, J, then I will assume it is his site. I also got the name of the Historian in D.C. to call. Thanks to the folks that gave me the lead I needed. His death was unfortunate but lead to his son being taken in by a family with other children. The son married one of them. Again, you all are great, Bob Shumate
