Hi List, I have always heard that Henry Wirz, Commandant of Andersonville was the only man hanged for war crimes after the Civil War. Recently I read that Champ Ferguson, a partisan leader, and Captain Robert Cobb Kennedy, a man involved in a plot to burn large sections of New York were also hanged after the war. Does anyone know of any others who received the death penalty for war crimes after the Civil War? James Horton, Esq.
These Crimes were not War Crimes as such. They were crimes against the State of New York and were dealt with under the Laws of New York, not Federal Law.
