    3. Katie, I found two J. E. Carters, and five John Carters (but no John Elam Carter), who served the confederacy from Mississippi: 148 Carter, J.E. Confederate Infantry 3rd Battalion, Mississippi Infantry (State Troops) 149 Carter, J.E. Confederate Withers' Company, Mississippi Reserve Corps ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- 204 Carter, John Confederate Cavalry 28th Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry 206 Carter, John Confederate Infantry 12th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry 207 Carter, John Confederate Sharpshooters 15th Battalion, Mississippi Sharpshooters 208 Carter, John Confederate Infantry 35th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- 209 Carter, John Confederate Infantry 43rd Regiment, Mississippi Infantry According to the Lowndes County (Columbus) MS Gen Web site, the 3rd Battalion, Miss Infantry, (State Troops; the 35th and 43rd Miss Inf Regts recruited from Lowndes County. Check out these web sites: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/index.html (click on soldiers, and then enter Carter, Mississippi and Confederate; that'll bring up all the Carters who served MS; you can scan through them, they are in alphabetical order. http://humphreys1625.homestead.com/UnitIndex.html (scroll down to Lowndes county for a list of units which had recruited from Lowndes county). I would also suggest you contact the Mississippi Dept of Archives, as they will have confederate soldiers' records also (those who served from Mississippi) http://www.mdah.state.ms.us/ Hope you can find the info you are looking for.
