There's an article in it that argues hookworm, combined with everything else, was the culprit behind the inordinately high death rate at Andersonville. Very good, and very worth checking out. Dennis
Dennis, I havent read the article but I have to say that your mention of hookworm here is the first I have heard in the years I have been doing research here. I assume that conection is that the biggest killer was diarrhea caused by the polluted water supply. The small stream that was in most part , the only source for a large part of 1864. This stream passed through the small town of Andersonville, the Guards encampment, the small bakery where all grease eventually ended up in the stream,,,,the guards hospital, latrines, then it passed into the stockade for prisoner use. When you had a 30,000 population in 26.5 acre area,,,its obvious what went into the drinking water. Can anyone send me the mailing address to North and South Magazine or could I get someone to send me a subscription card? Thanks.
