Joy, Interesting question (at least to a former Music major). My gut feeling is that the musicians had to already know how to play their instruments. However, they would have needed to learn all of the calls they played. Regimental bands were eliminated by a General Order of the War Department in the summer of 1872. After that all musicians were assigned to the individual companies. Hope this helps, Joy Stalnaker wrote: > Does anyone know how musicians, fifers and drummers, were selected for > each company in the Union Army? Hi, I have the discharge sheet for a Marcus Brockway, a member of the 150th state guards from Ohio. I have his membership sheet for the G.A.R. He was a musician. This is signed by Abraham Lincoln & Edwin Stanton. If this connects to anyone, I will sell them both for 400.00. Thanks, hope not to offend. I just saw the thread & decided to sell these nice pieces.
