Caren Since during the civil war the states were volunteering forces, in the beginning each state dressed pretty much the way it wanted and many were militias converted to State regiments, when the federal government supplied the uniforms they would look like US Army issue. In the end all Union forces gravitated towards some form of the US Army uniform. As was mentioned the CSA were much more varied.
