What stuck in my memory from my first trip to Vicksburg, back in the early 1950's, was all the Monuments which tell the story of the Siege, lasting about 1 1/2 months...This was not a battle, but a culmination of many skirmishes which resulted in the deaths of above 18,000 Americans from Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, Wisconsin, and other states...about 2/3 of these are unidentified...It left a lasting impression - "that this nation...shall not perish from the earth."
