I am looking for names of any BRASWELL Chaplains in the Confederate Military. Respectfully, Roy Hunter <>< [email protected]
Roy There are at HDS (civilwardata.com) under Confederates, 289 Braswell's listed (HDS is a subscription database) and at Soldiers and Sailors (free) http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/ there are 375 Braswell's listed. These are lists of men of the name that served in the CSA. As to Chaplains, that category is not searchable so the sources would have to be regimental histories etc. a long and tedious task. Perhaps a search at NARA would turn up a file dedicated to chaplains, but I would imagine that almost any company could have a preacher/minister in it listed as a soldier, who performed services for his group. The only real place that would show up is in letters home or regimental histories. If you are searching a special locale where a specific individual came from, the most likely source would be his hometown newspaper. Sorry I couldn't help more. Roy, I've gone through my list of Confederate soldiers with the surname of Braswell and found no soldiers listed as Chaplain. Out of 299 men with this surname, the breakdown is as follows: Captains - 2 1st Lieutenants - 3 2nd Lieutenants - 1 3rd Lieutenants - 1 Sergeant Majors - 1 1st Sergeants - 2 Sergeants - 5 Corporals - 12 Privates - 272 Edward Harding Washington, NC http://ehardingwbtsancestors.homestead.com/Index.html
