Troops GARRETT, WILLIAM NELSON, Lieutenant Colonel Previously served as 1st Lieutenant of Captain Lawrence M. Allen's Independent Cavalry Company (see roster for Company A, 5th Battalion N.C. Cavalry, in 2:340 of this series). Appointed Major of this regiment on October 11, 1862. Reported present on November 24, 1862, and on April 30, 1863. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on May 15, 1863. Reported present of June 30, 1863. Captured at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, September 9, 1963. Sent to Louisville, Kentucky, where he arrived on September 21, 1863. Confined at Johnson's Island, Ohio, September 25, 1863. Released at Johnson's Island on July 25, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
