I know you are looking for a Confederate , but we all know prisoners were taken all the time on both sides at the same battles. There are 44 on record here at Andersonvilel that were captured on that date at a place named Graysville Georgia. 1. [CIVIL-WAR] Civil War Units File CWUNITS New Version Available
    2. Carol Botteron
    3. Version 9.3 of the U.S. Civil War Units File (Dec. 18, 2007) is now available. The Civil War Units File (CWUNITS) lists people who have information on a unit, ship, or group (often rosters, battles, etc.) and are willing to help others research it. Some are experts; most are "just" helpful fellow researchers. If you see a listing for a unit you are interested in, you can send the contact person email and share information. There are also listings for battles, organizations, counties, ethnic groups, etc. If you write to me, please do *NOT* include this message in your reply. My time and disk space are limited. Also please do *NOT* include attached files. Thanks! I tested a lot of email addresses and deleted the ones that bounced. If you have a listing in the file, please make sure it's still there, and send me an update if needed. CWUNITS is five files (plus one for the FAQ) as follows: Part Filename Contents 1 CWUNITS1 USA national & states A-I 2 CWUNITS2 USA states K-N 3 CWUNITS3 USA states O-W 4 CWUNITS4 CSA national & states A-M 5 CWUNITS5 CSA states N-V Q CWUNITSQ FAQ -- frequently asked questions and answers Within a state the units are organized by number (1st Infantry, etc.). The Civil War Units File is on the American Civil War Homepage: http://sunsite.utk.edu/civil-war/warweb.html under the heading Rosters & Regimental Histories. I don't run this site. Questions and new listings for the CWUNITS file go to me. Please do _not_ send me attachments. Carol Botteron (ancestors on both sides) botteron@alum.mit.edu

Col. John S. Prather, Eighth Confederate Cavalry. HDQRS. FIRST CAVALRY BRIDGE, February 3, 1863. Gen. B. F. CHEATHAM, Cmdg. Polk's Corps: Inclosed I send you report of Maj. [John S.] Prather's skirmish with the enemy on the 31st ultimo, as furnished me by Capt. [L. W.] Battle, the officer appointed by me to investigate that matter. WM. B. WADE, Cmdg. First Cavalry Brigade. ROVER, TENN., February 2, 1863. CAPT.: Abut 2 p. m. on the 31st ultimo the enemy's cavalry in overwhelming numbers made a dash upon my pickets on the Rover and Versailles road. So sudden and rapid was the enemy's attack and pursuit, that I was not apprised of his approach until almost upon me. The officer commanding the picket (Lieut. [J. T.] Stales) nobly and bravely discharged his whole duty. My men were promptly mounted and moved forward to support the pickets and save the camp. Couriers were also promptly dispatched to withdraw the other pickets. The enemy dashed boldly forward under the best fire I could give them, and pressed me back to Unionville, where they withdrew at sunset and took up camp at Eagleville. Although everything was done in my power, I regret to have to report the loss of quite a number, among whom were 7 commissioned officers. The men captured were principally those who from some cause or other angered in camp, and others so badly mounted as to be unable to make their escape. One of my men was mortally wounded, and has since died. Several other wounded, but not dangerously. My whole loss, from the best information I have, is about 33. My whole force did not exceed 150 men, some of whom were on picket; one company, under Capt. [J. T.] Wright, scouting, and others foraging, &c., thus, you see, leaving me less than 100 men to fight the enemy. It was necessary to make the resistance here in order to protect my pickets, who were being pressed in, and also those on post. The attacking force of the enemy was upward of 2,000 strong (cavalry), with four pieces of artillery. The enemy's loss was 15 or 20 in killed and wounded. My pickets were well established and the utmost vigilance exercised. The force that passed through Middleton (or supposed to have passed through there) arrived at Unionville after we had fallen back below that point. The division of infantry, several thousand cavalry, with several batteries, the whole under Gen. Jefferson C. Davis, camped at Eagleville night before last, and moved of yesterday morning about 10 o'clock in the direction of Triune and Franklin, with the avowed intention of pursuing Gen. Wheeler. Respectfully submitted. JOHN S. PRATHER, Lieut.-Col., Cmdg. Eighth Confederate Regt. Capt. [L. W.] BATTLE, Fosterville. P. S.--I followed up the enemy as he withdrew and re-established myself at this post, and also scouted and ascertained his position at Eagleville. ----- FEBRUARY 13, 1863. The skirmish is over, the enemy have fled, and this evening finds me occupying my old position. They attacked my pickets this morning at 1 o'clock and soon after daylight, when I fell back slowly upon the infantry picket. I was in hopes they would have followed me there also, but, "smelling a mice," they concluded to return. Nobody hurt, and all is quiet at this time. Very respectfully, JOHN S. PRATHER, Lieut.-Col., Cmdg. Col. W. B. WADE. Source: Official Records CHAP. XXXV.] EXPEDITION TO FRANKLIN, TENN., ETC. PAGE 24-34 [Series I. Vol. 23. Part I, Reports. Serial No. 34.] There are 1330 on record as being in the 8th. Let me know if I can help in any specific soldiers. Does anyone know anything about this regiment Information found online: Eighth Confederate Cavalry Regiment The 8th Confederate Cavalry Regiment [aka: 2nd Mississippi and Alabama Cavlary]was organized just after the battle of Shiloh by the consolidation of Brewer's, Bell's, and Baskerville's battalions -- six Alabama, and four Mississippi companies. Brewer's battalion was among the first mounted troops raised in Alabama, and had fought at Shiloh with severe loss. The Eighth Confederate marched with the army into Kentucky, and was engaged in a series of bloody encounters, extending up to and subsequent to the battle of Murfreesboro. It was in Wheeler's dash on Rosecrans' rear during that battle, and was badly cut in two or three cavalry fights shortly after. The regiment lost very severely at Shelbyville, and was engaged at Chicamauga. Near Dalton, May 1864, the regiment had a protracted fight, with heavy loss. During the Dalton-Atlanta campaign the regiment fought as infantry nearly the whole time. It was engaged at Jonesboro, and in the captured of Stoneman. It was with Wheeler in his last grand raid into Tennessee, fighting often, then moved into Virginia, and fought Burbridge at Saltville. The Eighth then pursued Sherman into the Carolinas, sad was in constant contact with him till it surrendered at Greenesboro, less than 100 strong. Field and Staff Officers: Cols. R. H. R. H. 3. ----- Original Message ----- From: <elb2186@aol.com> > ...If you know more than I do about Chickamauga, tell me whether Sept 10 > was a battle date... ------------------------------------------------------ Well, not a battle - Chickamauga was 19-20 Sep - but there was considerable skirmishing. Here's what I found so far: "Meanwhile, in Georgia, Federals operated from Alpine toward Rome, La Fayette, and Summerville, probing Confederate positions south of Chattanooga. Bragg had ordered an attack on isolated Federal forces in McLemore's Cove, but it failed to materialize. Skirmishing occurred at Summerville, Pea Vine Creek, and near Graysville." (E. B. Long, "The Civil War Day," Doubleday, Garden City NY, 1971) "Forrest's rear guard reported that Crittenden was marching rapidly on Ringgold. Early on the morning of 10 September, troopers from the First Tennessee Cavalry has stampeded Polk's bivouac, claiming that the pursuing Federals were only a mile and a half away. The story proved false..." (Peter Cozzens, "This Terrible Sound: The Battle of Chickamauga", Univ of IL, Urbana, 1992). Correspondance on 9/10/1863 from Gen. Polk's HQ in the OR shows a dateline of "Near Snow Hill"; seems a good chance the 1st was within a couple miles of there as well. Might be able to find it in the OR Atlas, but it'll be after New Year's before I can get to mine which is packed away due Xmas decorations. Dennis

    1. Re: [CIVIL-WAR] DIARY from Fauquier Co., Virginia transcribed

    3. Tim Here are some items that may help pinpoint the area under concern. I searched using Whitting's Brigade and here is what I found: ARMY OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA General Joseph E. Johnston Whiting's Brigade: Brig. Gen. W.H.C. Whiting 4th Alabama 6th North Carolina 2d Mississippi Balthis's Staunton (Virginia) Battery 11th Mississippi Reilly's Rowan (North Carolina) Battery Fourth Alabama: http://www.civilwarhome.com/4alainf.htm This indicates that the fourth Alabama regiment was in Whiting's brigade on April 30, 1862. Reading the OCR at the volume and pages mentioned might give an insight into where the fellow was who was bringing in the cattle, note that Yorktown is mentioned here and in your diary: Vol. XI, Part 3--(114) Mentioned in report of Gen. Geo. B. McClellan, near Yorktown, April 20, 1862. (483) In Whiting's brigade, Johnston's army, April 30th, 459 strong. (531, 652) Same assignment. (654) Organized May 18th, 1858 as the "Rowan Artillery," this Battery of Light Artillery was called into active duty for twelve months service on May 3rd, 1861. On March 8th, 1862, it [Rowan Artillery] joined the army in the move to Yorktown and was actively engaged in rear-guard fighting when the army retired from Yorktown and Williamsburg to Richmond in May. To bring the Battery up to full strength, two 3-inch Burton and Ascher Rifled guns were added on May 20th, 1862. Still assigned to Whiting's Brigade, the Battery remained in that Brigade when Whiting became Divisional Commander and Col. E. M. Law assumed command of the Brigade. Hope this helps some, Mike Tim Kreh wrote: > Everyone, > I just joined the list because I transcribed a few pages from an old diary I recently found. It appears to have been written by someone from the Fauquier County area of Virginia who drove cattle for the Confederate Army. It would appear it was written during April of 1862 and mentions a few things about the Army and its movements from the peninsula (Yorktown) back up to Richmond. If anyone has any info after reading this diary, I would love to add to it.
