Melissa, All I could find on this was a snippet from Google books saying this. " A few days later the conferdate forces captured and burned the steamboat Mary Crane while it was taking on fuel wood. This was taken from the following book. Nashville, the Occupied City: The First Seventeen Maybe you could get this book at the libray and it would tell more on the steamboat. Hello, I am in need of some help or direction. My husband's 3rd great-grandfather Andrew Jackson Barker was with the 49th Tennessee Infantry, Company H during the Civil War. He enlisted on December 3, 1861 in Palmyra, Montgomery County, TN. and fought at the battle of Fort Donelson and was wounded on February 15, 1862. On November 22, 1862 he was captured and taken prisoner of war in Montgomery County and sent to Louisville, Kentucky. From Louiville, Kentucky he was put on a steamboat called the Mary Crane and sent to Vicksburg, Mississippi via Cairo, Illinois on November 29, 1862. All this information is from his military service records. My question is this: Can anyone tell me where I can find more information about the Mary Crane steamboat? Any publications, websites, government records, etc. Any direction would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Melissa Barker
The National Park Service's Soldiers & Sailors database at: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm lists: 11 George Ridgways 18 George RIdgeways If he served in one of the Volunteer armies, you can request his Compiled Military Service Record from the National Archives. If he served in the regular U. S. Army you can request his enlistment papers from the National Archives. If he/his widow/minor children/parents filed for a pension based on his service, you can request the pension application file from: (1) the National Archives if he served in the Union army, or (2) the individual Confederate state governments issued pensions for the former Confederate soldiers. Footnote indicates 5 George Ridgways and 3 George Ridgeways filed for pensions. Alice J. Kathy, He probably wasn't living in Blair County at that/those times. If you obtain his pension application file from the National Archives, you should find out where he was living when he filed for the pension. Or, go back and search the Ancestry.com index with his middle initial; that should tell you where (state) he was living when he filed. I assume that when you say "There are only 2 David Smouse listed..." that you are referring the Ancestry.com version of the Civil War pension index. The PA ARIAS Card Index lists the following David Smouse: David Smouse Private Company L 22d Cavalry (the 3-year unit) Mustered in Feb 22, 1864 Mustered out to 3d Regiment Provisional Cavalry, October 31, 1865 (The 3rd Provisional Cavalry was organized at Cumberland, Md., June 24, 1865, by consolidation of the 18th and 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry. Duty at Clarksburg, W. Va., till October, 1865. Mustered out October 31, 1865). His mother applied for a pension April 1, 1890, Application No. 418,741. Footnote lists a David F. Smouse (listed elsewhere as David S. Smouse Private Company E (Company E was recruited in Blair County) 84th Pa. This came across Andy Waskie's Civil War Philadelphia list: "ASSOCIATED PRESS RICHMOND, Va. - A man who sold Civil War relics that included munitions was killed by an explosion, and residents of the neighborhood were kept out of their homes Tuesday as experts looked for more explosives. Samuel H. White, 53, was found in his backyard Monday by neighbors who had heard the blast, Chesterfield County police said. Police Capt. Steve Neal said that what exploded was military ordinance, possibly dating from the Civil War. Authorities found unexploded military ordnance at his house, and on Tuesday they were still collecting and detonating explosives. White's business, Sam White Relics, advertised various relics for sale including Civil War artillery shells, cannon balls and bullets. His Web site says he "will disarm, clean, and preserve your Civil War period and earlier military ordinance" for about $35 each. About two dozen nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution and police spokeswoman Ann Reid said the evacuation would remain in effect infinitely. Neighbor Brian Dunkerly told the Richmond Times-Dispatch the explosion hurled a chunk of metal weighing close to 15 pounds that struck the roof of his front porch about a quarter mile from White's house. He said no one was hurt, although the piece of metal shattered his glass front door, hit the floor inside and bounced to the ceiling before coming to rest in the center of his living room. --- On the Net: Sam White Relics: http://www.samwhiterelics.com/ " Alice Gayley
I have a photo of some members of Co. D, 8th Mass. Vol. Militia "Minute Men of '61," including (I hope) my ancestor Egbert Hixon. There are seven men in the photo, and a list of eight names on the back: G. A. Foxcroft E. O. Hixon J. Elder J. A. Whitney I. Trask J. H. Williams C. Atkinson W. Berry We're guessing that the eighth name is most likely the one not in the photo. Of the seven men in the photo, four are standing, and three sitting or kneeling in front. Anyone who has experience with Civil War photos -- which of these is most likely to be the order of names of the men in the photo? 1---2---3---4 --5---6---7-- 4---5---6---7 --1---2---3-- 1---3---5---7 --2---4---6-- I don't have the photo on a web page, but have scanned it and could email it to anyone who requests it. Suggestions welcome. adTHANKSvance! Carol Botteron Maintainer, Civil War Units File
