Have you researched a U.S. Civil War unit or group? Are you willing and able to help others research that unit? The next version of the U.S. Civil War Units File (CWUNITS) will be available in late March. An announcement will be posted then. In the meantime I invite listings through Friday, March 21. Also welcome are reports of non-working addresses in other people's listings, updates to your own listings, etc. If you write to me, please do *NOT* include this message in your reply. My time and disk space are limited. Also please do *NOT* include attached files. Thanks! The purpose of the CWUNITS file is to let people list units, groups, battles, etc. that they have information on (from pension records, books, etc.) and are willing to help other people research. Typically the contact person had an ancestor who was in the unit, but re-enactors, history buffs, et al. are welcome. (This is *NOT* a list of re-enactment units.) People who are interested in a unit can send the contact person email and share information. If you have questions please read the FAQ first. If it doesn't answer your questions, feel free to ask me. The following addresses no longer work. If you are one of these people or know how to contact one, please email me. Unless we find new addresses we'll have to delete their listings. Hello, In this morning's on-line version of the "Bangor Daily News" there is a story, "Maine Women in History: Sarah SAMPSON." The article starts out: Sarah Sampson was one of several hundred women from Maine who volunteered to care for wounded and sick soldiers during the Civil War. There was no professional training, so she had to rely on her experience in caring for ill and injured family members and neighbors in order to look after the soldiers who were entrusted to her and others like her. http://bangornews.com/news/t/news.aspx?articleid=161040&zoneid=500 Just offering this as an FYI for you. Betty (near Lowell, MA) (For people on Civil War List, this is Bangor, Maine.) (The article didn't mention the "Maine soldiers" who were fighting in Florida, so Sarah might not have cared for my ancestor, Joseph KIDDER. But, it would be interesting to find out which "Maine soldiers" were at Gettsburg.)

Here is the Relief Corps for 1910. You will notice I only sent the list of deceased members once, with the 1915 list, as it was cumulative. A lot of the names are repetitious but I found it just too much to sort out and not repeat. I don't know when the Post disbanded but probably around the 1915 timeframe as there were only 10 members left. Ruth COL. W. H. GREENWOOD RELIEF CORPS NO. 65, PUTNEY, VT. Since he served in the regular U. S. Army, you can request his enlistment papers from the National Archives. Alice J. Speaking for myself, I would love to see the G.A.R. listings. As far as I'm concerned, they are Civil War related material. I don't have anyone from Vermont that I'm aware of, but even if I don't, the list just may be helpful to someone else. Thanks for thinking of the rest of us :o) Cathey Anti-Christmas is Antichrist.
Ruth By all means post them. Mike Ruddy Civil War Maintenance On Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 10:54 PM, Ruth Barton <mrgjb@sover.net> wrote: > I have copied 3 Rosters of G. A. R. Where can I find out general information on the rank of 3rd Corporal in the Civil War? Or information on Home Guards, namely in Alabama? Also info on obtaining my ancestor(s)' Civil War military records? My ancestor, David L. Smith (or DL Smith) was from Coosa Co, Alabama, 47 years old, listed as 3rd Corporal at enlistment (7/25/1864), in the Ellis Logan Mounted Regiment (that is presumed to be a Home Guard). He previously served as Lt. in the 68th Regt of the 3rd Brigade, 7th Division of Coosa Co, AL, Commissioned 18 Sep 1840. Was that also a Home Guard? What would have been the function of this Regiment and Brigade prior to the Civil War? Where could I get more information on such? (As a side note: His widow, Mary Ann (Polly) Pody stated he "died in the war" (possibly 1865), but his grave (roughly hand carved/etched) states 1868). Where can I find more detailed information on Alabama Home Guards? I found the following, but it does not tell me any skirmish details or why these men would be "unfit" for regular duty (in a regular Civil War regiment). My ancestor was 47 at enlistment (seemingly would be healthy enough to serve), so could he have been wounded previously from his service in the 68th Regt (between 1840 and 1864)? I have not yet obtained my ancestor's service records. The information I previously found indicates that the National Archives states that Alabama maintains the service records, but Alabama claims they must be obtained from the National Archives. A very confusing situation for someone new to requesting service records . . . Any advice or any way to make that process easier? Any and all info is appreciated.
