    1. Re: Re: [CIVIL-WAR] July 4th 1863
    2. Jim Gilmer
    3. Don, Thanks for the explanation; but would his date of parole been Feb 27, 1865, instead of Feb 27, 1864? The Atlanta Campaign was May thru September, 1864. The story of your grandfather's death from ills contracted as a POW was repeated many thousands fold, both for union and confederate soldiers. Your grandfather was from Indiana. I think about all the families that migrated to Indiana from the Carolinas, Virginia, etc., leaving other branches of their families there, and generations later, the same families are fighting each other in the civil war. There was no date on this letter and I made the assumption that it was written in 1863. I was wrong. It was written in 1864. Eighteen days after this letter was written William was captured by the rebels near Atlanta and sent to Andersonville. He survived life at Andersonville and was sent to Florence. He was released on parole February 27, 1864. Received his discharge on June 10, 1865. He died March 19, 1868 never having fully recovered from the ills acquired as a POW. Fortunately my Grandmother was born on April 29, 1866. If not for this birth I would not be here writing this letter. 1. [CIVIL-WAR] Civil War Units File CWUNITS Call for Listings
    2. Carol Botteron
    3. Have you researched a U.S. Civil War unit or group? Are you willing and able to help others research that unit? The next version of the U.S. Civil War Units File (CWUNITS) will become available in late May. An announcement will be posted then. In the meantime I invite listings through Friday, July 25. Also welcome are reports of non-working addresses in other people's listings, updates to your own listings, etc. For those who have had problems with the obsolete CWUNITS files at http://ftp.cac.psu.edu/pub/genealogy/roots-l/genealog/ and http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/academic/history/marshall/military/civil_war_usa/ I'm delighted to be able to report that they have been removed. Thanks again to the webmasters who were kind enough to help. If you write to me, please do *NOT* include this message in your reply. My time and disk space are limited. Also please do *NOT* include attached files. Thanks! The purpose of the CWUNITS file is to let people list units, groups, battles, etc. that they have information on (from pension records, books, etc.) and are willing to help other people research. Typically the contact person had an ancestor who was in the unit, but re-enactors, history buffs, et al. are welcome. (This is _not_ a list of re-enactment units.) People who are interested in a unit can send the contact person email and share information. If you have questions please read the FAQ first. If it doesn't answer your question, feel free to ask me. The following addresses no longer work. If you are one of these people or know how to contact one, please email me. Unless we find new addresses we'll have to delete their listings. civilwar@ccia.com cmangold@ix.netcom.com lminnis@worldnet.att.net (Lee Minnis) Anyone who'd like to volunteer to be a contact, please send me email. If you are volunteering for more than one unit, it's OK to put them all in the same message. Please list your entries in this format (sample addresses are fake): Illinois (USA) 4th Illinois Cavalry, Co. F 1861-4 Abe.Lincoln@uky.edu http://www.fakesample.com/4thil 18th Reg. Ill. Infantry 1865 jd@fakesample.com (John Doe) (Somebody's Volunteers) Instructions -- include the following: Country (USA or CSA) and state. Start each entry with the number of the regiment or whatever. Years (if applicable, but not necessary). Your email address on each line. Your real name. If you have a web page for the unit, include the URL (but we need your email address and name too). Also please include a statement like "I volunteer to be a contact for this unit." This is so we can be sure that everyone we list understands what the file is for. This is a big project, and if you send listings in the wrong format we reserve the right to send them back for you to fix. If there's anything in your listings that is not obvious, tell me! If we can't get your listings complete and clear by the time I have to send the file to the uploaders, your listings cannot be included. If you already have listings in the file, there's no need to send them again. But if your address has changed, please tell me and send updated listings. CWUNITS is five files (plus one for the intro and one for the FAQ) as follows: Part Filename Contents 0 CWUNITS introduction only 1 CWUNITS1 USA national & states A-I 2 CWUNITS2 USA states K-N 3 CWUNITS3 USA states O-W 4 CWUNITS4 CSA national & states A-M 5 CWUNITS5 CSA states N-V Q FAQ frequently asked questions and answers Parts 1-5 include the intro as well as the listings. Within a state the units are organized by number (1st Infantry, etc.). On the WWW, the file is available on the American Civil War Homepage URL: http://sunsite.utk.edu/civil-war/warweb.html under the heading Rosters & Regimental Histories. To get the current version of the file by email at any time: Send email to ROOTS-L-request@rootsweb.com (Upper and lower case count in the email address and everywhere else.) Subject: archive For part 2 (for example), send the text: get genealog.cwunits2 For the FAQ, send the text: get genealog.cwunitsq The period (.) has to be after genealog and before the file name. To get a listing of all of the ROOTS-L files, send the command get roots-l.catalog Carol Botteron (ancestors on both sides) botteron@alum.mit.edu

    1. [CIVIL-WAR] How to handle obnoxious emails
    2. Listmembers I am using the list to give you the infomation given me by Rootsweb Tech support. When you receive an obnoxious email you have about 24 hours to send it to AOL or whichever ISP it came from (MSN, Earthlink, etc) it can usually be traced if you do this quickly. The logs are kept at the ISPs from 24 to 48 hours. AOL, for example will attempt to punish or cut off the generator of the email according to the technician I spoke to and hackers falsifying an AOL address can be prosecuted. Here is the rule: if you get a vulgar or obnoxious email sent to your private address, forward the message to the ISP and if you wish to keep me in the loop, please forward a copy me. Do not post it to the list or discuss it on the list. One subscriber pointed out to me that the guidelines actually condoned sending nasty letters in private. Nasty letters are not condoned or desired. The rule is really means if you must send a nasty email direct it to the party offending you or to me but leave the list for discussions of Civil War Genealogy or History. Thank you for your patience. If you have a comment or question Direct it to me at mpruddy@msn.com Mike Ruddy List Maintenance Civil War

We should go off list with this discussion beginning now and refer all our suspicions etc. to me directly at mpruddy@msn.com Playing to a larger audience only will provoke more emails and counter-accusations. There is no solution to this problem other than go back on topic on the list with Civil War and the Genealogy discussed in a manner which reflect respect for everyone on the list. Thanks, Mike

    1. [CIVIL-WAR] First hand slavery opinion.
    2. Don Coatney
    3. In this transcribed letter written by one Lt. C. P. Davis to my G Grandfather George Washington Coatney there is a good first hand account of how slavery was viewed by him. Don Coatney Unknown Date SIXTY-SIXTH INDIANA REGIMENT Hd. Qrs. Co. F 66th Ind. Pulaski, Tenn. Friend George: I with gratitude and respect- again resume my seat to address you. I hope you will pardon my long delay in writing for the shifting scenes of war, the multiplecity of Gen. Orders, the requirements of Red tape are at least good reasons why I have not written sooner, but I can give you the fullest assurance that my regard and respect for you has been as fervent as if I had been writing every day. There is one noble trait in your character not to refer to others which I greatly admire and which will ever claim for you an abiding place in my affections and that is your adhesion to true honesty. There is no man who is able to approach you and accuse you of deceiving him through the instrumentality of a hypocritical religion. O: how few can claim to be guided by an enlightened Christianity but what such charges can be legitimally applied. George the old proverb "The longer a man lives the more he learns." This is a fertile region the fields and hills presenting the appearance of the fair fields of Indiana. There are plenty of hogs and cattle here and not frequently you meet negroes who are all most white. I was never in a country so poluted in amalgamation as this There are not a few who are now held in abject slavery who are no as white as common people. I saw a little girl in town last week whom I took to be the master's own child but was told she was his slave. This case and many others which I have witnessed has caused my moral faculties to exclaim to Hell with such a system of slavery. I have no important news to chronicle from this point. The news from Grant and Burnsides is highly interesting. The Rebellion is fast playing out. I see that Colfus is elected speaker Congress fully organized and we may hear of that body doing something in the way of peace. Well George as I have no doubt wearyed yours patience by my hasty written letter. I will close hoping to hear from you soon. My health is very good. The boys are well. Respectfully yours Lt. C. P. Davis

    2. In analyzing an email it is not the body of the message nor the attachment which is important but the header which may (or may not - there are methods to disquise origin) indicate where the message comes from. Again the rule is keep all this off the List using resources available: Rootsweb or me or your ISP. Anyone who wishes to can forward me a received message I will attempt to analyze its origin and failing that request help from tech support. But let us leave the list for its purpose. thanks, Mike

I did that about four times over four years, plan never to do it again. ************ and this was the return path: ************ Return-Path: <NCarolinaCME@aol.com> Received: from mx01.dreamscape.com (mx01.dreamscape.com [206.64.128.64]) by mail2.dreamscape.com (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id h633PcJ3012162 for <workman@dreamscape.com>; Wed, 2 Jul 2003 23:25:38 -0400 (EDT) Received: from imo-r05.mx.aol.com (imo-r05.mx.aol.com [152.163.225.101]) by mx01.dreamscape.com (8.12.9/8.12.9) with ESMTP id h633Pa9P018217 for <workman@dreamscape.com>; Wed, 2 Jul 2003 23:25:37 -0400 (EDT) Received: from NCarolinaCME@aol.com by imo-r05.mx.aol.com (mail_out_v36_r1.1.) id e.75.14b8f7ba (4539) for <workman@dreamscape.com>; Wed, 2 Jul 2003 23:25:26 -0400 (EDT) From: NCarolinaCME@aol.com Message-ID: <75.14b8f7ba.2c34fc25@aol.com> Date: Wed, 2 Jul 2003 23:25:25 EDT Subject: Re: [CIVIL-WAR] Some thoughts-- To: workman@dreamscape.com MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="part1_75.14b8f7ba.2c34fc25_boundary" X-Mailer: 8.0 for Windows sub 6014 X-UIDL: FU+"!_9o"!)l1"!!C_"! ***************** Sharon ----- Original Message ----- From: <NCarolinaCMF@aol.com> To: <CIVIL-WAR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 03, 2003 12:04 AM Subject: Re: [CIVIL-WAR] Hate Mail from A List Member > How dare you tell a lie like that...if you have the e-mail...post it..forward > it to the list. > That is evil!! > > Carolyn M. Sharon, l have not sent you a private e-mail....l don't understand why you are saying l have?? My last e-mail to the list, or anyone subscribed to the list, was the one where l said we need to be more considerate, and l certainly included myself....and l meant what l said...someone must be sending them in my name, and if they are, l would like to see them. Thanks, Carolyn M. Woody-Fuller "Remember the days of old; consider the generations long past." (Deuteronomy 32:7a)

    3. Mike, What you just wrote sounds like an endorsement of what Carolyn has done - sent hateful messages to people through private e-mail. I didn't subscribe to this or any other RootsWeb maillist to end up receiving ugly insulting messages from members who might not like my opinions, my style, my name, or my address. Some list owners make an opposite rule from yours, telling people NOT to use the list for private flame wars, and that infractions could get people unsubbed from the list. I like that better. Sharon

    1. [CIVIL-WAR] Remarks..........
    2. I joined this list to learn. To learn the whys and wherefores of the conflagration that BOTH of my great grandfathers were involved in. One on each side. I did not join to see the hate and anger that is spewed on this list. I am so sorry that it is still north and south. We are one and it is a shame that the fight is still being fought. Thank you all, for what I did NOT learn. I don't need it. will find a book. Barb
