    3. Hello One thing to remember about Maryland as well as Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, and Virginia(later West Virginia) was that they raised both northern and southern units. In a recent magazine article Maryland, My Maryland by Edward Steers Jr(1), he states the many faces of Maryland Seccession and the War between the States. He states that official records show that 63000 Marylanders answered the Call to serve and defend the Union but 22000 Marylander Answered the Call of Richmond. With Maryland being the border of 3 sides of Washington DC, there were many spies, and others that tried to undermine the Union War effort. Maryland produced more than half of the Nations tabacco and outproducted both Kentucky and Missouri combined. By 1790 the Slave population reached 10000 just about the white population. By 1860 the slaves outnumbered the Whites by 2/3rds. John wilkes Boothe hid in Charles Co Md. which was one of Marylands largest Pro South Counties. I would say you have 1 out of 3 chance that your man was a Southerner anyway. Dan Geyer Esq. 1North and South Vol. 6 No. 2 Febuary 2003. 3. Kathy, Both Amazan.com and Barnes and Noble on-line have out of print book sections. The will do a search for an out of print book if you agree to purchase what they find. You might also keep an eye on Civil War books on eBay. You can request they send you updates on a specific search, for instance, Books: New Hampshire Fifth Regiment. If something fitting your search becomes available, they notify you by email. IF you know the town/county where your ancestor lived in NH, try contacting the local public library and/or the local historic/genealogical society. You could also look at the NHGenWeb county site at: http://www.usroots.com/~usgwnhus/ Alice Gayley Kathy918@aol.com wrote: > Hello, > My gr gr grandfather Jonathan Leroy French served for the NH Fifth Regiment. > I have the Child History of the Regiment, and Jonathan's pension papers and > service records. 1. [CIVIL-WAR] Soldier Descriptions in Miltary Records
    2. Hi All, The description for my CW ancestor and his brother (Jabez & Francis Coonrod, NJ Union soldiers) in their miltary papers describes them both as having black hair, black eyes and dark complexion. I find this to be an unexpected description for brothers that I expectd to be of European (possibly German based on last name?) background. Francis was mustered in, in February so I doubt he would still have had a dark tan from working outside. I also doubt they would have had any African ancestry as they were not in colored units (39th NJ volunteers and 8th NJ Infantry). I suppose the description may mean they had Native American blood from somewhere but I have not traced their ancestry back past their parents (mother's maiden name unknown) to confirm or deny that. Has anyone else found the descriptions of black hair, black eyes and dark complexion in CW military papers and if so, what nationalities were those soldiers?
